The first thing we check on a contractor's site is whether an owner's rep can tell, in one visit, which projects you take and which you pass on. South of the city, Sunbeam Development's I-65 South Commerce Park at Exit 90 in Franklin could reach 6.8 million square feet across nine buildings. If you build industrial shells, that work gets its own page with finished photos, kept apart from your residential jobs.
We'd work in this order. Each project type you want gets a page with finished photos, your license number and the counties you build in. Next comes a bid invitation form that asks for the bid date and your role, and sends it straight to your estimator. SEO, AI search and paid ads point at those pages once they're ready, and each inquiry keeps its source through to award.
Our own service area runs from our Indianapolis base across Marion County and out to Noblesville, Greenwood and Plainfield, and we serve out-of-state contractors remotely. If you're adding a county, the ads and pages go there once your crews are ready to take the work.
General contractor marketing questions
What does general contractor marketing cost?
It's priced after the free strategy call, because a firm chasing public bids needs different work than one selling custom homes or tenant build-outs. If your website can't carry that yet, the Marketing Startup Kit is $7,997, or three monthly payments of $2,799, and covers a custom 15 page website plus three months of consulting.
Can the website serve residential and commercial buyers?
Yes, if you really do both. We'd give each its own menu item, project photos and form. A homeowner planning an addition then sees residential work first, and a building owner sees tenant build-outs, with no guessing which list applies.
Do we need a separate page for every project type?
Only for project types you want more of and can show finished work for. Close cousins, like office and retail build-outs, can share a page. We write a page when we can name the question its buyer asks and the photos that answer it.
How do you assess lead quality when sales cycles are long?
We tag each inquiry by stage: invited, bid sent, shortlisted, awarded or lost. An open bid stays open in the count, with its age noted, so a slow award isn't mistaken for a loss.
Can we market an expansion before we have local projects?
Yes, if the page is honest about it. It can say you now take work in that county and show projects from where you've built, each labeled with its real town. We won't imply a local office or a job that didn't happen there.
What is the first step with Trojan Digital Marketing?
Send us your website, the project types you want and the counties you'll work in. We run the free audit on the page owners land on, then tell you on the free call whether the gap is the site, search or how bids get tracked.
Request a free general contractor marketing audit to review whether your current presence supports the projects you want. For a defined website, search, or campaign need, contact Trojan Digital Marketing to discuss the scope.
Should a general contractor's website show license and prequalification details?
Yes, and near the top, because owners and public agencies check them before they'll send documents. Indianapolis publishes its list of licensed contractors, and the city can confirm a contractor's insurance and bond. For public work, Indiana's Public Works Certification Board prequalifies contractors, so the page should say whether you hold that certificate and how to confirm it.
How do you market to owners and to other contractors at the same time?
Give each its own route from the first click. A property owner planning a build-out wants to see finished projects and how you run a job. A project manager sending an invitation wants your bonding capacity and a place to drop bid documents. One mixed contact form slows both of them down, and the bid invitation is the one that usually gets lost.
How long before marketing shows up in awarded work?
Longer than in a service trade, since a commercial award can take months to land after the first contact. We keep each inquiry's source attached from first contact to award, so after a few bid cycles you can see which searches and pages ended in contracts. Paid search can start sooner, but it's worth running only once those pages and the tracking are ready.
What happens on the free strategy call?
We look at where your last few bid invitations came from and which ones you won. The first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes. Bring a list of the project types you want more of and the counties your crews will work in, and we'll tell you plainly whether marketing is the right next spend or whether estimating capacity comes first.
What if we don't win more bids after the new site launches?
Then we check whether the gap is visibility or the bid itself. If invitations went up but awards didn't, price or scope is the likely cause, and more marketing money won't fix that. If invitations stayed flat, we look at which pages owners read and which searches brought them, and change those before spending more.

A PRACTICAL MARKETING WORKSHOPTurn a project gallery into a bid readiness desk
Open this walkthroughClose this walkthrough
General contractor prospects often need to establish whether the company fits a project before they can provide a complete brief. A commercial tenant improvement, a residential addition, and a ground up build can involve different decision makers and estimating effort. Your website should help each buyer identify the relevant experience and understand the first review. We would organize the project library by the engagements your company accepts, then explain what information makes a request ready for the next conversation.
Worked example · hypothetical planning scenario
Picture a hypothetical general contractor receiving an email with a floor plan but no project address, decision date, or explanation of its role in the selection. Rather than promote a form that asks only for a name and phone, we would create a project introduction with optional plan status, location, intended use, current decision stage, and a contact role. The confirmation explains that the team will review fit; it does not claim an estimate is underway. A matching portfolio example would show the contractor’s responsibility and coordination approach for a comparable engagement. The business can then distinguish a qualified invitation from an exploratory request, a subcontractor inquiry, and a project it cannot pursue. Each stage gets its own follow up owner.
| Information supplied | What the website clarifies | Next internal decision |
|---|---|---|
| Idea and approximate location | Early discussion requirements | Is a discovery call appropriate? |
| Defined scope or prepared plans | Document review route and estimating process | Should the team pursue this invitation? |
| Bid invitation with a deadline | Required context and responsible contact | Can the team participate on these terms? |
Build one useful capability brief
- Select a project with permission to show the setting, scope, company role, and decisions the team coordinated; avoid suggesting ownership of another firm’s work.
- Identify the project types, geographic coverage, and engagement models leadership actually wants to pursue over the next planning period.
- Collect a redacted example of the information an estimator needs before committing substantial time to a proposal.
- Create separate contact paths for potential customers, vendors, and employment inquiries so they do not inflate the same acquisition report.
Start with estimating time
Tell us where the estimating team loses time on unsuitable requests. We can scope a project introduction page and capability library around those decisions, then connect them to commercial or residential search intent according to your real business mix.
Which Indiana rules and local landmarks should a contractor's site reflect?
General contractor marketing from Indianapolis, Indiana works best when the site shows the credentials owners and public agencies check before they'll send a bid package.
Indianapolis, Indiana
The City of Indianapolis says all contractors must be licensed and get the required permits for their work, and its Department of Business and Neighborhood Services can confirm a contractor's license, general liability insurance, surety bond and workers' compensation coverage or waiver.
Put your license number on the site where an owner can check it against the city's list, next to a line saying your insurance and bond are current.
indy.gov, Licensed ContractorsChecked September 26, 2026Indiana's Public Works Certification Board requires contractors to be prequalified before bidding a state public works project estimated at over 150,000 dollars, and before starting work on a local public works project estimated at over 300,000 dollars.
It's a credential anyone can verify, so a public sector page should say whether you hold the certificate and which kinds of work it covers.
Indiana Department of Administration, Contractors and Sub-contractorsChecked September 26, 2026The Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis counted 10,173 single-family building permits across its nine-county region in 2025, up 1 percent from 10,044 in 2024.
With permit counts about level, winning a custom home depends on making an owner's shortlist, so finished home pages should say what you handled and where you built.
BAGI, Single-Family Building Permits Close the Year with ConfidenceChecked September 26, 2026INDOT lists the North Split among its completed major projects.
If you've built downtown, describe the streets and delivery arrangements your crew actually used, with permission to publish them.

Each item is a public rule or an industry count, and we claim no construction clients in Indianapolis. Licensing differs in Marion County's excluded cities, so check with the city you build in. Any general contractor in central Indiana can work with us from our Indianapolis base, and that includes firms building up in Zionsville and Westfield.
How does a bid inquiry move from a search to an award?
Here's how we set up general contractor marketing for an Indianapolis, Indiana firm so each owner inquiry and bid invitation can be followed to a decision.
- Name the work you wantYou list the project types and counties you'll bid, plus the jobs you'll pass on.
- Put checkable proof up frontWe place your license number and prequalification status beside finished projects, above the contact form.
- Split the inquiry routesOwners get a project inquiry form, and project managers get a bid invitation route with room for documents.
- Keep the source on every leadEach call and form carries its source in your CRM from first contact through proposal and award.
- Review what reached awardAfter each bid cycle we compare awarded work with the pages and searches behind it and move budget toward what won.
Decide what “general contractor” means for your company
The label covers different business models. Your company may focus on residential construction, selected commercial projects, tenant improvements, remodeling, or another defined category. It may work directly with owners, through professional referral relationships, or through a bid process. A useful website makes those distinctions clear.
Start with the role you take and the project types you can support. Explain the work your team performs, the responsibilities it manages, and the information needed for a first discussion. Credentials, project claims, and descriptions of subcontractor relationships should be approved by the business before publication.
| Positioning decision | Information to establish | Marketing consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Project category | The work you want to pursue and work you decline | Separate relevant service pages and campaign intent |
| Customer relationship | Owner, developer, property manager, or professional partner | Choose the right evidence and contact route |
| Engagement stage | Early planning, defined scope, or formal bid invitation | Ask for the information appropriate to that stage |
| Delivery territory | Where the business can realistically perform the work | Set accurate coverage and expansion priorities |
If excavation is a separate service line, the excavation marketing approach can help describe that specialist offer. A page should not imply that every capability associated with construction is part of your business simply because the terms attract searches.
Build evidence for the person evaluating the risk
A prospective owner wants to know whether the company understands a project like theirs. A professional contact may need a concise view of relevant experience, the company role, and a dependable way to continue the discussion. Both audiences benefit from precise evidence.

Project pages can identify the category of work, the business's actual contribution, approved project images, and the context that made the engagement relevant. A large photograph without that explanation can be ambiguous. Was your company the general contractor, a specialist contributor, or involved in only one phase? State the role accurately.
A construction website project can organize that evidence into capability pages, project stories, and a clear contact experience. We can also help brief a concise capability document for conversations that continue outside the website. The document and public site should tell the same factual story.
Where the business lacks a publishable case study, use other truthful material: a clear process explanation, team biographies approved by the people involved, or a description of the services available. Do not replace missing evidence with invented client logos or anonymous success claims.
Separate owner inquiries from bid conversations
An owner exploring an idea may need to understand your planning process before they can supply a detailed scope. A professional sending a bid invitation may already have documents and a deadline. Asking both to complete the same generic form can create unnecessary friction and leave your team without the right context.

For owner inquiries, the first form can identify the project category, location, current stage, and desired next conversation. For a professional project inquiry, a route can explain how to provide the approved documentation and who will review it. File handling and access should follow the business's chosen process.
If homeowner renovations are a major part of your offer, a distinct remodeling marketing journey may be appropriate. The shared brand can remain coherent while the visitor sees the information relevant to their decision.
Clear routes also help reporting. A subcontractor introduction, a job application, a sales solicitation, and a project opportunity may all reach the office. They should not all be reported as prospective construction customers.
Define the opportunity before paying to acquire more
We work with your team to define what makes an opportunity worth reviewing. This can include project category, location, timing, fit with your role, available scope information, and the identity of the person making the inquiry. Some details will be unknown initially; the record should show what needs to be learned.
Qualification is a progression, not a verdict delivered by a form. An early stage owner may be suitable but not ready for a proposal. A complete bid package may still be outside the work the company wants. Those cases deserve different next actions and different reason codes.
A hypothetical bid readiness review
- Does the project match the categories we have chosen to pursue?
- Is the requested contractor role clear enough for a useful discussion?
- Do we have enough information to decide whether to invest estimating time?
- Does the timing fit the business's current commitments?
- Who will own the next conversation and record the decision?
This is a marketing and business development checklist. Your team remains responsible for project evaluation, estimating, and deciding whether to bid. The marketing system should support that judgment and make the result visible.
Construction SEO, AEO, and GEO with a defined purpose
- Question
- Identify what the customer needs to know.
- Answer
- Explain it clearly.
- Evidence
- Support the answer with a source.
A search plan should map specific services and buyer questions to pages that answer them. A commercial capability page, an owner planning guide, and a project story have different jobs. Linking them deliberately helps visitors move from a broad question to evidence and then to an appropriate conversation.

Examples of useful answer focused content include what information your company requests before a project review, which project categories it accepts, and how its own consultation process works. The answers should come from the business. They should not become generic technical construction advice written without the relevant review.
Our SEO, AEO, and GEO service addresses the clarity and discoverability of that information. Google's AI search guidance keeps foundational SEO relevant. We evaluate useful content and observable visibility without presenting a place in an AI answer as something an agency can guarantee.
Expand locally with evidence that belongs to the area
A contractor may serve a large territory while operating from a limited number of genuine locations. The website should communicate that structure honestly. A service area is not automatically an office, and a proposed expansion is not an established local history.
Where an area deserves a dedicated page, explain the actual service coverage, relevant approved work, and the kind of project conversation the business can accept there. If there is little distinct information, a stronger regional capability page may serve the visitor better than multiple thin city pages.
Google Business Profile's representation guidelines provide a useful reference for accurate business identity. We align public details with the company's real operations, then distinguish those details from the locations selected for a paid campaign.
Make advertising earn its place in the plan
General contractor PPC can be useful when there is a defined audience, an offer worth testing, and a process for handling the response. It is less informative when every construction related search leads to a broad homepage and every submission counts as success.

A paid campaign scope can focus on a selected project category and a corresponding capability page. Search intent review should distinguish customer demand from training, employment, materials, and unrelated trade work. The office's reasons for declining inquiries then help refine the campaign.
Professional relationships and repeat work may also contribute heavily to the pipeline. The marketing report should preserve those sources rather than force every opportunity into a paid or organic category. The purpose is to understand how the business wins suitable work, not to give a digital channel credit for every project.
Measure opportunity value alongside pursuit effort
- Event → record
- Define the event and check the record.
- Meaning → decision
- Review the business meaning before acting.
Awarded work matters, but the effort needed to pursue it matters too. Track qualified opportunities, proposals or bids pursued, awarded projects, and open opportunities by stage. Where practical, add a simple record of estimating effort so the business can see whether a source consumes substantial resources without producing suitable awards.

For a hypothetical comparison, two sources each produce four opportunities. One group requires extensive proposal work on projects outside the preferred scope; the other creates fewer unanswered questions and a clearer path to a decision. Equal inquiry counts would hide that difference. The business should evaluate fit and effort before expanding the first source.
Google Analytics defines distinct recommended lead events, but the company's actual stage definitions still need to be configured and maintained. A website event is not a substitute for an awarded project record. We connect the reporting specification with the CRM process the team can realistically use.
Deliver a system the business can continue using
A scoped engagement can produce a positioning brief, a capability page plan, project story copy, contact route requirements, campaign intent mapping, and an opportunity reporting definition. The deliverables should identify the facts your team must approve and the accounts the business needs to control.
Account access, editable files, tracking definitions, and integration ownership belong in the handover. The marketing ownership checklist provides practical acceptance questions. The business should be able to understand and maintain its marketing system after a project is complete.
A hypothetical first 90 days
Days 1 to 30: decide which project categories and audiences the initial scope will support. Review the current website, available project evidence, contact handling, and opportunity records. Identify factual gaps and obtain the approvals needed for public claims.
Days 31 to 60: publish the priority capability content, improve the owner and professional contact routes, and establish reporting stages. If paid acquisition is appropriate, test one defined offer with agreed spending and qualification boundaries.
Days 61 to 90: review inquiry suitability, the effort required to pursue opportunities, and the progress of open projects. Use those findings to choose the next content category or market. This sequence is a planning example; award timing and search outcomes depend on the actual business and market.
