- The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Milton's heavy rain on October 9 to 10, 2024, caused widespread river and urban flooding, particularly in the St. Petersburg and Tampa area. It adds that the Hillsborough River had record-high crests, the highest points a flooding river reaches. National Hurricane Center
- The National Weather Service in Tampa Bay lists a high of 20.40 inches of Milton rain at a CoCoRaHS site near St. Petersburg. It lists 16.51 inches at a site called Tampa 5.1 S. National Weather Service Tampa Bay
- A City of Tampa stormwater presentation from a Forest Hills community meeting says Milton's rain in 24 hours was about a quarter of the area's annual total. It adds that the wettest September on record came just before Helene, so the ground was already soaked. City of Tampa
- The National Hurricane Center says Tampa Bay saw only 1 to 2 feet of inundation, or water over dry land, from Milton because winds were mostly offshore. The coast south of landfall took the worst surge. A track shift of less than 30 nautical miles north of the observed landfall would have meant a significant storm surge into Tampa Bay. National Hurricane Center
- The National Hurricane Center's report on Hurricane Helene in September 2024 puts the peak storm surge in Tampa Bay at 5 to 7 feet above ground. That's close to the 5 to 8 feet that was forecast. National Hurricane Center
Florida License Rules Behind Tampa Roofing and Mold Work
- Section 489.105 of the 2026 Florida Statutes defines roofing contractor work as installing, maintaining, repairing, altering and designing roofs and roofing materials, plus waterproofing and coatings. The scope also reaches skylights, required roof-deck attachments, and repair or replacement of wood roof sheathing or fascia during roof work. Florida Statutes
- A 2004 executive order on roofing, posted by the Florida Building Code Information System, describes two roofing credentials. A certified contractor holds a certificate of competency from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and can work anywhere in Florida. A registered contractor is valid only in the local jurisdiction that issued the underlying exam. The order is from 2004, so check current rules with the department, and look up any license on MyFloridaLicense.com. Florida Building Code Information System
- Section 468.8411 of the 2024 Florida Statutes defines mold remediation as treating mold or mold-contaminated matter greater than 10 square feet. That work includes removal, cleaning, sanitizing, demolition and other treatment, including preventive activities. Mold assessment uses the same 10 square foot threshold. Florida Statutes
- The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation licenses mold assessors and remediators through its Mold-Related Services Licensing Program. They're regulated under Part XVI of Chapter 468 of the Florida Statutes. The statutes also say a remediator can't do work that requires a Chapter 489 contractor license unless also licensed under that chapter or complying with it. Florida DBPR
Tampa Re-Roof Permits, Condo Rules and Owner-Occupied Homes
- The City of Tampa's Construction Services FAQ says a permit is needed for a new roof covering or re-roofing. Roofing work of 500 square feet or less falls outside that requirement, so check with the city's Construction Services office on jobs near that size. City of Tampa
- The City of Tampa's roof replacement inspection page says inspections are virtual only, through a tool called Vu-Spex, for contractors and homeowners. A dry-in inspection is required for all tile roofs and homeowner permits. On non-tile roofs, contractors can submit a roof mitigation attestation instead, and any permitted work still needs a final inspection approval. City of Tampa
- The City of Tampa says its residential permits apply only to single-family homes and duplexes. Condos need a commercial permit even though people live in them. City of Tampa
- The Census Bureau's QuickFacts table for Tampa city shows an owner-occupied housing unit rate of 50.3%, based on 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey estimates. That's about half. U.S. Census Bureau
Westshore's Commercial Market and Tampa International Airport
- By the Westshore Alliance's count, Westshore has 100,000 employees across more than 6,500 businesses, the most of any commercial market around Tampa Bay. An older membership sheet listed 4,000 businesses, so the count has changed over time. Westshore Alliance
- A 2023 year-in-review report from the Westshore Alliance describes Westshore as a 10 square mile area on the western edge of Tampa. Westshore Alliance
- Tampa International Airport is inside the Westshore district, according to the Westshore Alliance's site. Westshore Alliance
Ybor City's Cigar Roots, 7th Avenue and Historic Buildings
- The National Park Service describes the Ybor City Historic District as a National Historic Landmark a short distance northeast of Tampa's main business district. Its page cites more than 950 historic buildings and structures. National Park Service
- The National Park Service says Vicente Martínez-Ybor moved his cigar factories from Key West and founded the cigar town in 1886. National Park Service
- The National Park Service says Ybor City's character is best preserved along the 7th Avenue Commercial Strip. The Ybor City archway marks the entrance to that strip. National Park Service
- The National Register nomination for the Ybor City Historic District describes the Barrio Latino Commission as the body that protects Ybor City's architectural integrity. It's an older document, so check the commission's current role before you plan window or roof work on a historic Ybor building. National Park Service
Eight Redevelopment Areas, the Channel District and West Tampa
- The City of Tampa's community redevelopment page lists eight areas: Central Park, Channel District, Downtown, Drew Park, East Tampa, Tampa Heights Riverfront, West Tampa and Ybor City. A 2024 city report splits Ybor City into Ybor City I and II and Downtown into Core and Non-Core, so counts differ by source. City of Tampa
- The City of Tampa's Channel District page describes the district as moving from a warehouse district into an urban residential and arts and entertainment area. City of Tampa
- The City of Tampa's 2015 West Tampa redevelopment plan says the area covers 964.33 acres, more or less. Its legal description traces the edges along Columbus Drive, Armenia Avenue, Kennedy Boulevard and the Hillsborough River. City of Tampa
