What this PDF signer does

This tool places a visible signature mark on a PDF. It does not verify identity, determine whether the signer has authority, or establish the legal validity of an agreement. Confirm the document recipient’s required signing process before using it.

The tool does not create a certificate based digital signature or a managed signing record. If a document requires identity verification, an activity record, a certificate, or another formal signing step, use a process that supplies those features.

How to sign a PDF online for free

01
Drop your PDF
Drag a PDF into the upload zone or click to pick from your computer. The file stays on your device. No upload happens at any point during the process.
02
Set up your signature
Click Add Signature. Draw it with your finger or trackpad, type your name and pick a handwriting style, or upload a PNG of a real scanned signature. Your signature gets saved for future PDFs automatically.
03
Click anywhere to place it
Once your signature is loaded, click on any spot on any page to drop it. Drag to reposition. Pull the corner handle to resize. Add initials, dates, text fields, and checkboxes the same way.
04
Apply to multiple pages
Need to initial every page of a long contract? Place your initials once, select them, and click Apply to All Pages. The same goes for date stamps and any other field.
05
Download the signed PDF
Click Download Signed, then open and review the exported PDF. The tool adds visible signatures, dates, text, and checkbox marks to the document; it does not make the file tamper proof or prevent all later editing. Keep the exact copy you intend to send.

In most cases, yes. The federal ESIGN Act of 2000 and the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act adopted by 49 states establish that electronic signatures are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures for most types of agreements. The signature is enforceable as long as the signer intended to sign, the parties consented to electronic signing, and a record of the signed document exists. A flattened PDF signed using this tool meets those requirements.

Where this tool falls short of platforms like DocuSign and Adobe Sign is in the certification layer. Those services attach cryptographic certificates, time stamps, IP addresses, and audit trails to each signature. That extra layer matters in court when a signature is challenged, in industries with regulatory requirements like healthcare and financial services, and in jurisdictions like the European Union where eIDAS distinguishes between simple, advanced, and qualified e signatures. For change orders, freelance contracts, internal approvals, and most everyday agreements between private parties, the simple e signature this tool produces is sufficient and legally binding.

Frequently asked questions about signing PDFs online

Your documents and signatures stay on your device
Every operation runs locally inside your browser. No PDF upload, no server processing, no tracking pixels, no analytics on your file content. Saved signatures are stored in your own browser's localStorage and never transmitted anywhere. Safe for confidential client work, legal documents, medical records, and any document you would not want sitting on a third party server.

A PRACTICAL FIELD GUIDE

Add a signature and review the finished PDF before sending

This free PDF signer places signatures, initials, dates, text, and checkboxes onto a PDF in your browser. Draw a signature, type one in an available handwriting style, or supply a signature image, then position the element on the page. It is useful when you need to add visible information to an everyday document. The tool does not verify anyone’s identity, invite other signers, or create a certificate based digital signature. Check the recipient’s requirements before choosing the workflow.

Complete a document with visible fields

Add your name, date, initials, or checkbox marks where the document requests them. Use the original instructions to decide what belongs in each place. Review spelling and positioning after export, particularly when the source is a scan with uneven page alignment.

Reuse your own signature on another PDF

The signature library can save your created signature in this browser for later use. Choose the correct saved mark each time. On a shared device, remember that saved signature images are local reusable assets, not protected identity credentials.

Initial multiple pages efficiently

Place initials once, select the element, and use Apply to All Pages if the position is appropriate across the document. Inspect every page afterward. Mixed page sizes, rotations, or different signature areas can require individual adjustment.

How to use it

  1. 01

    Open a suitable PDF

Choose the PDF and allow its pages to render. Use a file under 20 MB with no more than 30 pages for this workspace. If necessary, use the PDF toolkit to prepare a smaller working document, while retaining the original separately.

  2. 02

    Create or choose your signature

Select Add Signature and choose drawing, typing, or uploading an image. A transparent signature image usually places more cleanly over a document than a photograph with a large background. Choose the mark you intend to use; the tool does not confirm ownership of it.

  3. 03

    Place and size the element

Move the signature onto the correct page and resize it to fit the intended area without covering surrounding text. Add initials separately where requested. Work at a useful zoom level and inspect the whole page as well as the individual field.

  4. 04

Complete dates, text, and checkbox marks

Add the remaining visible fields and check them against the document instructions. Use Apply to All Pages only when the repeated element belongs in the same relative area. Review each repeated placement instead of assuming every page shares a layout.

  5. 05

    Download and verify the output

Choose Download Signed, open the resulting PDF, and review every edited page. The tool adds visible content to the document; it does not make the file tamper proof or prevent all later editing. Send the finished document through your own approved channel.

FROM INPUT TO DECISION

Worked example: prepare a three page acknowledgment

A fictional document that asks for a name, date, signature, and initials.

PageRequested fieldCheck before sending
1
Printed name and date
Correct text, visible baseline, no covered instructions
2
Initials
Correct page and intended initial area
3
Signature and date
Complete mark inside the requested space

If the initials area appears in a different place on each page, place them individually. After export, verify that visible marks match the preview and that the original page content remains readable.

Visible signing differs from a managed signing workflow

Some recipients need a signer invitation, identity checks, a detailed activity record, or certificate backed integrity. Those are different requirements from placing a visible signature image. Choose a service that supports the required process when this browser tool does not.

Keep the original and control reusable marks

Retain the unsigned source and the copy you actually sent. If you save a signature locally, treat it like other reusable personal material. Remove saved marks through the tool when appropriate and manage browser storage on shared devices deliberately.

Questions & limits

PDF processing is local to the browser. Saved signature images use local storage and can remain between visits; the working PDF is not a synchronized cloud document.

The workspace accepts PDFs under 20 MB and up to 30 pages, with a rendering size guard. It does not send documents, authenticate signers, notarize them, or guarantee legal validity or recipient acceptance.

Can I draw, type, or upload my signature?

Yes. The signature interface offers all three methods. Choose the one suitable for the document and inspect the result. A typed handwriting style is a visual rendering, not a separate proof of identity.

Is this the same as a digital signature certificate?

No. This tool adds visible content to PDF pages. It does not create a certificate based signature or an independent integrity record. If the recipient requires that, use a workflow that provides those features.

Does Apply to All Pages know where the signature line is?

No. It repeats the selected element at the corresponding position. It does not read the document or locate signature fields automatically. Check each page, especially in a packet assembled from different sources.

Will my saved signature appear on another computer?

No automatic sync is provided. Saved signatures are in the current browser’s local storage. A different browser or cleared storage may not contain them. Create or supply the signature again if you are using a different device.

Can the recipient edit the signed PDF later?

Adding visible signatures does not make a PDF impossible to edit. This tool does not provide tamper proof storage or certificate verification. Keep the exact file you sent and use the recipient’s required signing process when integrity evidence matters.
