AI Overviews Traffic and Conversions: What to Measure

Are AI Overviews bringing you any customers? Answer with three numbers kept apart. First, how often Google showed you in AI answers. Then, how many people reached your site and how many good-fit customers got in touch. Google's tools don't always link those for each person. Trojan Digital Marketing, an Indianapolis company with 1,400+ live websites, sets up tracking this way and leaves the gaps in view.

We hold our own numbers to the same rules. On Garrison, the microsite software from Trojan Digital Marketing, we count calls and form inquiries, leave missed calls out and never call an inquiry a job. Use this alongside our AI Overviews optimization guide when time is short and the data is messy. Bring your current report and we'll mark what it can support: the first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes.

Write a metric dictionary before building the dashboard

Connect an observation to a decisionDefine the event, check the record, review its business meaning and choose the next action.

For each metric, record the source, definition, scope, time basis, and known limitations. “Impressions” means little without the platform and aggregation. “Leads” could mean every form submission, unique inquiries after spam removal, or sales qualified opportunities. We agree on what counts as a lead before comparing agencies or months.

Use names that preserve the source. Label a platform's AI impressions as such, an analytics session as a recorded session, and a manual citation as an observed citation. Do not rename a Web search export “AI traffic” because the underlying content was written for AI search.

Use the current Google report within its documented scope

Google's Search generative AI performance help describes AI impressions and dimensions including pages, countries, devices, and dates. Check what is available in the actual property, because insufficient activity can affect report availability. The documented report is not a complete prompt, click, or conversion ledger.

Keep property level and page level aggregation distinct, and do not add dedicated AI impressions to overall Web totals as if they were unrelated audiences. Preserve the original export and its filters. If the interface or metric definitions change, note the change in the report so a later reader can interpret the series.

The AI search reporting playbook provides a practical structure for assembling those definitions, evidence, and decisions in one recurring review.

Review website acquisition without guessing missing attribution

Website analytics can show recorded sessions, landing pages, and key events under the site's measurement configuration. Referrer information may help identify some AI related visits, but its absence does not prove that no AI experience influenced the customer. People can switch devices, return later, or contact the business by another route.

Google Analytics distinguishes session acquisition from first user acquisition in its Traffic acquisition documentation. Choose the view that matches the question and name it clearly. Mixing first-touch user counts with session conversion rates gives a report that looks precise but compares different groups of people.

We check the landing page before reading anything into a traffic change. A broken form, changed consent behavior, tracking modification, or new phone route can affect measured activity. Keep these events in the change log with content and technical releases.

Define an inquiry that matters to the business

Qualified lead

Booked job

Keep the outcome definitions separateTrack visits, inquiries and booked jobs separately. The widths illustrate stages without showing measured totals.

We write down who marks a lead as qualified and when they review it. A field that no one consistently maintains should not become the headline measure in an executive report.

Separate spam, duplicate contacts, existing customer requests, and new opportunities when the CRM process permits it. A qualified inquiry should reflect agreed criteria such as service fit, geographic eligibility, and a real need the team can evaluate. Avoid requiring information that sales cannot consistently collect.

For a hypothetical commercial service company, the owner might distinguish a general price request from an assessment opportunity with a known property and contact person. That distinction can improve planning even when the original discovery channel is unknown. It's a made-up reporting choice with no industry benchmark behind it.

Our AI automation service can sort incoming requests once your process is written down. We'd route anything unclear to a person and never let the system mark a lead qualified by itself.

Keep citation evidence beside the numbers

A few well documented observations can explain what a page was cited for, whether the answer was accurate, and whether the destination fit the question. They complement aggregate reports. They do not establish how often all customers saw the business or how much revenue the appearance generated.

Use a structured citation review when an appearance matters to a service decision. We keep the searches where you didn't appear, and the ones we couldn't check. A report built only from good screenshots can't show a real trend.

Compare periods that answer a real question

Keep date ranges comparable and note seasonal, operational, and measurement changes. If a business adds a service, changes prices, or pauses advertising, those events may affect inquiries. If a page changed near the end of the period, most of that period shows the old page.

Use plain language for small samples. “There were too few qualified inquiries to distinguish a pattern” is more useful than an impressive percentage built on one event. Do not add overlapping export windows together. When results are mixed, describe each layer and propose the next check instead of choosing the most flattering metric.

Make the monthly review end with a decision

Publish the change and check the result.
Keep useful information dependableReview the evidence, update what changed and check the published result. A new date alone adds no value.

Give each recurring metric a maintenance owner. Someone must notice if an event stops firing, a source label changes, or a CRM field is no longer completed. Each month, compare the forms submitted with the inquiries recorded. A mismatch can point to a tracking problem before anyone calls it a marketing slump. Document the check and its limits; no tracking setup captures every influence on a buyer's decision, but a maintained setup is easier to trust.

Organize the review around one question: what should the team do next? A rise in relevant exposure with weak inquiry completion may justify a landing page review. Repeated inaccurate service descriptions may justify a facts correction. Stable qualified inquiries with noisy citation observations may justify continuing the current plan while gathering more evidence.

List the decision, supporting evidence, unresolved uncertainty, responsible person, and review trigger. We'd skip a monthly deck that reports activity and never changes a priority. For content specific choices, the answer format article can help translate a buyer's confusion into a page improvement.

Request a measurement review if your reports combine AI exposure, website traffic, and sales into a number no one can explain. Bring the source exports and the definitions your team uses. The goal is a report that supports a defensible business decision, including when the evidence is not yet sufficient.
