How to Compare GEO and AEO Agency Proposals

You asked a few agencies how to get your business named in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers. Now their GEO and AEO proposals use the same words for different jobs. One includes technical fixes and expert-led content; another is a dashboard plus advice. Compare the actual work, line by line, before you compare prices.

Give every provider the same business brief

Map questions to the right pageFilled cells show which buyer questions each service page would cover. Performance needs separate measurement.

State the service you want to grow, the audience, the real geographic coverage, the current website, and the problem you have observed. Include available data and known constraints. If a provider receives a different brief, its recommendation may reasonably differ, making a price comparison less useful.

One of the first things we ask on a brief is who can approve service claims, grant account access and make changes. A provider proposing extensive development work needs to know whether it can make changes or must coordinate with another vendor. A content plan needs a reliable source of business expertise.

Translate terminology into a deliverable table

Ask each provider to list what it will deliver, how often, and in what form. Separate research, recommendations, writing, implementation, monitoring, and reporting. When we see “optimization” as a line item, we ask which pages or workflows it touches before reading further.

Work areaComparison question
Diagnosis
Which pages and systems are inspected, and what is excluded?
Content
Who supplies expertise, verifies claims, and approves publication?
Implementation
Who makes changes and checks the public result?
Monitoring
Which platforms, samples, and definitions are used?
Reporting
What decisions will the review support?

Use the service business audit scope to assess the diagnostic portion. Explicit sampling limits are a sign of clarity; claiming complete coverage without a page or system inventory deserves further questions.

Compare evidence standards

Ask for an example finding and a sample report. Can you identify the source of the claim, the affected destination, the recommendation, and its uncertainty? A score is fine as a summary if the observations behind it are shown. When we report numbers for Garrison, the microsite software from Trojan Digital Marketing, we count calls and form inquiries and leave missed calls out.

We check any claim about mandatory AI files, special formatting rules or guaranteed inclusion against Google's AI optimization guidance first. Ask the provider to distinguish documented requirements from its own tested or untested methods.

A proprietary process can still be valuable. The buying question is whether its inputs, outputs, and practical limits are understandable enough to evaluate. You do not need every internal detail, but you do need evidence for the commitments being sold.

Examine the content model

Determine whether the engagement includes service page improvements, original research, expert interviews, consolidation, comparisons, or only new articles. Ask how topics are selected and how overlap with existing pages is handled. We'd treat a page count as an output measure and ask what each planned page is for.

The distinction between AI SEO and automated production is especially relevant when a proposal emphasizes scale. Ask who owns factual approval and how the business maintains the resulting library when services or policies change.

Make account access and ownership comparable

List the assets and accounts separately: domains, hosting, CMS, analytics, Search Console, content files, design files, monitoring projects, and automation connections. Ask who owns each, who can administer it, and what happens when the engagement ends.

Clarify the rights to original work and the limits of licensed materials. An agency may use software or data that cannot simply be transferred as owned property. That is not automatically a problem, but the proposal should explain how the business can continue operating and retain useful records.

The agency scope playbook helps turn those answers into a written brief and acceptance checklist. Contract language should reflect the actual arrangement, rather than relying on a broad sales statement.

Understand recurring costs and scope changes

Separate agency labor from subscriptions, hosting, advertising and other ongoing costs. Our own agent plans list AI usage, ad spend and hardware as extra costs on top of setup and support. Ask which costs continue after cancellation and which capabilities depend on the agency's accounts. A low initial fee can be difficult to assess when required tools or implementation are excluded.

Review how unexpected findings are handled. If the audit reveals a broken form or a major content conflict, does the provider quote additional work, replace a planned task, or hand the issue to another vendor? A clear change process helps the business control priorities without pretending every problem can be predicted in advance.

Compare reporting and decision quality

B: one change

Change one thing you can learn fromKeep the goal and measurement consistent, record the change and compare the result in context.

A report should show completed work, evidence, relevant outcomes, and the next recommendation. It should distinguish platform exposure, sampled citations, website activity, and qualified inquiries. Ask how the provider handles missing data, small samples, and changes in measurement definitions.

The retainer reporting guide provides a useful benchmark for the structure. We trust a report that admits a small sample more than one that credits the agency with every good month.

Choose the proposal you can govern and evaluate

Record unanswered questions before deciding

Keep a short list of ambiguities and ask each provider to resolve them in writing. A verbal explanation may be helpful, but the final scope should reflect the answer. If publication approval, implementation access, data export, or ongoing costs remain unclear, those are concrete comparison gaps rather than minor administrative details.

Also distinguish a required capability from a preference. You may need the provider to implement changes because your team has no developer. You may prefer a particular reporting format but be able to work with another clear format. Marking the difference helps avoid rejecting a suitable proposal over presentation while overlooking a missing operational requirement. The final choice should reflect the service your business can actually use and maintain.

The strongest fit is the service that addresses your problem with a maintainable scope, clear responsibilities, and reviewable evidence. Price matters, but it should be compared against what is actually included and what your team must contribute.

Our SEO and AI search service can be evaluated using this same framework. Ask Trojan Digital Marketing for a concrete scope discussion and bring the decision you need to make. A useful proposal should leave you better able to assess the work before you approve it.
