A business facts endpoint is a public URL that returns a structured record of selected business information. A developer might use it to keep a website widget, internal publishing tool, or approved integration aligned with the same business facts. It can be useful when it reduces conflicting versions of information.
It is not a universal AI discovery standard. Publishing a file at a chosen path does not establish that Google, ChatGPT, or another system will retrieve it. Begin with the user or integration that needs the record, the facts it can legitimately expose, and the person who will maintain it.
This article extends our agent ready website framework. The goal is a dependable public information resource with an explicit purpose, not a decorative endpoint added to a marketing checklist.
Define the consumer before the fields
Write down who will use the data and what decision it supports. An internal content check might compare the official business name across pages. A service selector might need a stable list of offerings. A partner integration might need a public contact URL. Each purpose suggests a different minimum record.
If no consumer is identified, a maintained HTML page may already solve the problem. A second format adds work because its fields, links, and update process must remain accurate. Choose structured data when the team can explain the benefit and test whether the intended consumer uses it correctly.
Keep the first version small. A name, website, concise description, service list, service area description, and official next step link may be enough. Do not include speculative opening hours, addresses, prices, or capabilities merely because a generic schema contains those fields.
Separate public facts from private operational data
The endpoint should contain information approved for public display. It should not expose customer records, private email threads, staff only notes, API credentials, or unpublished business plans. A field does not become appropriate for publication just because an integration can read it.
Use the same factual boundaries as the website. A business that serves customers nationally through digital delivery should not acquire a fictional office address in JSON. A user supplied source link should remain identified as supplied unless someone actually reviewed it against the claim.
When a value is unknown, define how it is represented. An omitted optional field or an explicit null can be more honest than an empty string that a consumer misinterprets. Document the choice so integrations do not treat absence as a confirmed negative.
Document a small, explicit record
The following is a hypothetical custom record. The path, field names, and version convention are design choices for a particular implementation. They are not a claim that search engines recognize this exact format.
{
"schemaVersion": "1.0",
"businessName": "Example Studio",
"website": "https://example.com/",
"services": ["Website design", "Content planning"],
"serviceArea": "Remote service within the United States",
"contactUrl": "https://example.com/contact",
"reviewedAt": "2026-09-07"
}
Define what each field means and who approves it. State whether a service name is merely descriptive or also a stable identifier. If the format will change, explain how consumers learn about breaking changes. A version field is useful only when the team follows the versioning rule it documents.
The JSON specification defines the interchange format and its application/json media type. Use a real JSON serializer rather than assembling strings by hand. Then parse the published response as a consumer would and check that it contains the intended record.
Choose one authoritative publishing source
A public endpoint should not become another manually edited copy of the homepage. Where practical, generate the relevant HTML and JSON from the same approved record. That reduces the number of places a factual correction must be made.
The content model should distinguish the fact, its supporting source, its reviewer, and its last substantive review. Updating a build timestamp does not mean someone rechecked the service area or contact route. If both timestamps matter, give them different names and definitions.
The business facts maintenance playbook describes that ownership process. The AI Answer Kit can help organize a supplied business brief, but a human reviewer still needs to confirm the facts before publication.
Make retrieval predictable
A public read endpoint should return the documented format at a stable URL. It should not require a visual interaction to reveal a value. When the response changes, caching should be configured so intended consumers can obtain the current version within the freshness window the business needs.
For systems that benefit from conditional requests, an entity tag can identify a response version. MDN's ETag documentation explains that mechanism. The implementation still needs to connect the tag to the actual response content and handle updates correctly.
Do not make a public facts lookup perform a hidden business action. Reading the service list should not create a lead, reserve a slot, or subscribe a visitor. If a later integration can submit a request, treat it as a separate action with its own validation and authority.
Check the endpoint against the visible website
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Identity | Does the name and official website match the public business? |
| Offering | Are the services currently available and described accurately? |
| Geography | Is a service area clearly distinct from an office address? |
| Freshness | Does the review date refer to an actual fact review? |
| Consumer behavior | Can the intended integration read and interpret the record? |
Also check invalid URLs, impossible dates, duplicate service identifiers, and claims without support. A record can be syntactically valid JSON while still being misleading. Technical parsing and factual review answer different questions and should both have an owner.
Connect facts to the action they support
- Question
- Identify what the customer needs to know.
- Answer
- Explain it clearly.
- Evidence
- Support the answer with a source.
A service list used by a form should agree with the options a visitor can select. A contact URL should lead to the actual inquiry route. An integration should not describe a service as bookable when the business only accepts a request for availability.
Read the related guidance on clear forms and reviewable actions before extending public facts into a transactional workflow. A readable record supports understanding; it does not authorize an assistant to perform every action it describes.
Questions before publication
Will this endpoint improve AI search visibility?
Do not assume that outcome. Measure whether a known consumer retrieves and uses the record. Search visibility requires separate evidence. The endpoint can still be worthwhile for consistency and integration even without a search claim.
Who should maintain it?
A business owner or content owner should approve the facts, while a technical owner maintains the format and delivery. One person may perform both roles in a small team, but the two responsibilities should remain explicit.
