To resize an image well, choose the required dimensions, preserve the intended proportions, and inspect the result in its actual layout. Blur often appears when a small source is enlarged or when a file is compressed too aggressively. Stretching appears when the width and height no longer match the original shape.

The free image converter from Trojan Digital Marketing resizes WebP, JPEG and PNG still images right in your browser. Jeff Clerisier, our founder, has done web and brand work since 2016. If blurry photos are hurting a service page, the first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes. This guide focuses on dimensions and proportion. For the complete preparation workflow, use our website image conversion guide.

Separate pixel dimensions from display size

An image file contains a grid of pixels. The page decides how much layout space that image occupies. Those two sizes are related, but they are not always identical. A card that appears relatively small on a page may use a larger source so it still looks clear in different display conditions.

The browser can choose between responsive image candidates when the website provides them. Google’s guide to descriptive image syntax explains the role of source dimensions and display density. Ask what your platform already generates before creating many manual versions that the site will never use.

Calculate a proportional resize

Use the original ratio to determine the matching dimension. For a hypothetical source measuring 1800 by 1200 pixels, the width to height ratio is 1.5. If the intended export is 900 pixels wide, the matching height is 600 pixels. Both dimensions have been reduced by the same factor.

In our converter the lock is on by default, so typing 900 in the width box fills in 600 for this example. Confirm the resulting dimensions anyway. Avoid typing unrelated width and height values just to fit a box. Turning that example into 900 by 900 would change its shape. If the destination needs a square composition, crop intentionally in an image editor before preparing the final size.

Begin with enough source detail

If a source is already small, enlarging it doesn’t recreate detail that was never there, and you get a bigger file with soft edges. Our converter will still enlarge a file up to 10,000 pixels a side if you ask, so check the source width before typing a bigger number. Ask for the original photograph or a larger approved export when the intended use needs more detail.

This is particularly important for photographs that demonstrate workmanship and for screenshots containing text. A tiny social media download may be acceptable as a reference but unsuitable as a large service page image. Keep the original source available so future layout changes do not force you to work from a degraded copy.

Resize a representative file first

We’d test one file that represents the group before converting a whole batch. Choose the dimensions, export it, and place it in the destination layout. Confirm that the important subject remains clear on the screen sizes that matter to the page.

If the group mixes portrait photographs, wide landscapes, and square graphics, separate those shapes or review their settings individually. One pair of dimensions may fit only one group. Inspect every output instead of assuming a successful first conversion means every later image preserved its proportions.

Look for the cause of blur before changing settings

Compare the source and output at a similar display size. If both look soft, the problem may originate in the source. If only the output looks degraded, inspect the dimensions and quality setting. If the downloaded file looks good but the published version does not, investigate the website’s resizing and display behavior.

Changing format can also affect the result. A screenshot with fine lettering needs a different visual check from a textured photograph. Our WebP, JPEG, and PNG guide explains format and transparency decisions so you do not try to solve every image problem with a resize.

Check the published page, not just the file

A layout can stretch an otherwise correct image by forcing it into an unsuitable width and height. It can also crop an image inside a fixed container. When a person’s face, a product detail, or a diagram label disappears after upload, review the page settings before making repeated exports.

Ask the person maintaining the page to confirm the image fills its space without distortion. When we hand over files, we write down the intended crop and focal point. That explanation is often more helpful than a filename containing only a version number.

  • Confirm the original and exported pixel dimensions.
  • Check that the aspect ratio matches the intended composition.
  • Inspect meaningful detail at the actual display size.
  • Verify that the page uses the approved file.
  • Review mobile and larger screen layouts before considering the task complete.

Save an export specification for repeated work

Once an image works well, record the layout, target dimensions, format, and any relevant crop instructions. Use that specification as a starting point for similar assets, then inspect new files because their content may behave differently.

Return to the converter when the dimensions are clear, and make the smallest suitable export that preserves the information the reader needs.
