A question connected to an answer and its evidence

Want to know how many visitors ChatGPT and other AI tools send you, apart from Google? Start with how people really arrive. One person finds you in an AI answer, searches your name later and calls from a bookmark, so analytics may record only that last visit. Another clicks straight from an AI product and shows up as a clear referral. Both count, but they're different evidence.

The useful starting point is to separate platform visibility, website visits, and business outcomes. Build a report for each layer, define the connection between them, and leave missing information visible. That's a safer basis for budgeting than one total labeled AI traffic. Trojan Digital Marketing, based in Indianapolis, sets up this reporting, and we keep each visit's raw source label next to our grouping so anyone can check it. Send us your current report: the first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes.

Use Search Console to examine the search activity its reports describe. Use website analytics to examine recorded sessions and events. Use your customer management system or inquiry log to review qualified opportunities. These systems count different things and may apply different date boundaries, filters, and attribution rules. When the numbers disagree, we check the definitions before blaming any one system.

Google's dedicated generative AI report provides impressions and dimensions including pages, countries, devices, and dates. It is a visibility report, not a complete lead attribution system. Its activity overlaps the broader Web search reporting context; do not add the two totals together. Consult the official report documentation before building a combined dashboard.

For website visits, Google's GA4 Traffic acquisition documentation explains the relevant acquisition report. Preserve the report's session context when interpreting source and medium. A first user acquisition view and a session acquisition view answer different questions, so keep their labels attached when exporting data.

Create a transparent source group

Begin with referring domains actually present in your analytics records. Identify which belong to AI products by checking the providers' official sites. Record the exact domain, the reason for including it, and the date reviewed. Keep that mapping as a small maintained table rather than an unexplained filter someone pasted into a dashboard years ago.

We don't label every unfamiliar domain as AI. Product domains, redirect behavior, and app experiences can change. Keep an unclassified category for investigation. If your reporting system already supplies an AI related channel, inspect its definition before building another overlapping group. Our test is whether someone else could rebuild the grouping and get the same count. The size of the AI total doesn't matter.

  • Retain the original source and medium values alongside your custom group.
  • Document whether the group uses exact domains, patterns, or a platform's built in definition.
  • Separate paid campaigns when their source labels resemble organic referrals.
  • Keep unknown and direct visits visible instead of assigning them to AI by assumption.
  • Version the mapping when you add or remove a provider.

Check the path from a visit to an inquiry

Open your site through a controlled test journey when the product and your permissions allow it. Check the landing page, consent experience, analytics event, form submission, and inquiry record. Mark test submissions clearly and remove them from business reporting. A successful page load alone does not establish that the rest of the measurement chain works.

Inspect common breakpoints such as a booking tool on another domain, a form that reloads twice, or a contact button that records a click but not a completed action. A phone link click indicates intent to call; it does not prove the call connected. A thank you page view may repeat when someone refreshes. Name events according to what they actually confirm.

This work often belongs within a website improvement project because design, forms, redirects, and tracking interact. We ask for one person to own the full path, so no vendor checks only the piece they installed.

Keep outcome definitions close to the data

Define an inquiry as the receipt of a real contact request. Define qualification using your business's service fit, geography, need, and ability to respond. Define a sale using the actual commercial event your team recognizes. We never count a page scroll as a proposal request just because both are easy to track.

Review landing pages as well as source totals. A referral to a useful comparison article has a different immediate job from a visit to a quote form. Look for the next appropriate action on each page, then evaluate whether that action occurs and whether the resulting inquiries fit the business. A small, relevant audience can justify content work without producing a dramatic traffic chart.

Use self reported discovery as another clue

Consider asking new customers how they first heard about the business. Keep the question optional and the choices understandable. Preserve a free text answer when people mention an unfamiliar source. Do not overwrite analytics with the answer; store it as a separate field describing what the customer remembers.

In a hypothetical journey, a buyer remembers an assistant recommendation but arrives through a branded search. The inquiry log can retain both the reported discovery and the recorded session source. The two observations are compatible. Calling one the true source and discarding the other would remove useful context from the buying journey.

Review changes before claiming a trend

When referral activity moves, check whether the source mapping, consent configuration, form behavior, or reporting period changed. We look at raw counts before any percentages, especially with a small sample. Avoid attributing a change to one article when several campaigns, seasonal factors, or site changes happened at the same time.

Our guide to AI citation evidence explains what manual answer samples can add to this picture. The AI search measurement plan provides a review structure for keeping those observations separate while using them together.

A useful monthly report should end with a concrete choice: repair a missing event, clarify a landing page, improve inquiry handling, or continue observing a small sample. Connect those decisions to your search and AI visibility strategy. Accurate classification helps you decide what to do next; it does not need to reconstruct every invisible step in a customer's research to be valuable.
