How to Audit Schema Markup for Accurate Business Facts

Your schema passes the validator but lists an office you closed or a rating you can't show? Check each fact against the page and the owner first, then fix the code.

Structured data can pass a validator and still describe the wrong business, an expired offer or a location that doesn't exist. A validator checks format, and only the owner can approve the facts. Trojan Digital Marketing, based in Indianapolis, holds its own site to this. Our markup describes one organization with our phone and Indianapolis as the only place, and it leaves out a street address, hours and ratings. To have us check yours, the first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes.

We start every structured data review with the facts. Establish what the visible page says, what evidence supports those statements, and which entity the page describes. Then check whether the machine readable representation matches. This order helps a small business avoid spending time perfecting markup that should not have been published in the first place.

A structured data review should answer whether the representation is truthful, whether the implementation can be parsed, and whether it meets the requirements of a relevant search feature. A passing answer to one does not settle the others. The business owner can approve facts without evaluating syntax, while a developer can fix syntax without knowing whether a published service still exists.

We name who owns each layer at the start. An agency handoff that says only “schema installed” leaves important questions unanswered. A useful handoff identifies the pages and templates covered, the facts approved, the tests performed, and any features the business should not expect from that implementation.

Identify the subject of the page

A homepage may describe the organization. A service page may explain a specific offer. An article may present an author's explanation of a topic. A location page may describe a real operating location or service availability in a region. These distinctions should remain clear in the structured representation.

We don't assume every page needs every available schema type. Ask what the information describes and whether the chosen type is appropriate. Adding more labels creates more facts to maintain. A smaller, accurate representation is easier to review than a large block assembled from unrelated examples.

Use our consistent identity process to confirm business names, brand relationships, and public destinations before filling in fields. If the business identity is unresolved in ordinary prose, code will not resolve it.

Choose the entity before choosing additional properties

Google's Organization guidance describes administrative information that can help distinguish an organization, such as its name, URL, and logo. It does not require filling every available property. Include information that applies and has a reliable source, rather than treating an empty optional field as an invitation to invent a value.

A legal name and a public brand name may be different facts about a business. A parent company and a branch may be different entities. An author may be an employee, a contributor, or an outside expert. Write those relationships in ordinary language first, then have the implementer represent them consistently. A shared logo alone does not establish that two organizations are identical.

Use a stable identifier strategy for entities repeated across pages. The identifier is a technical reference that connects descriptions of the same subject; it is not a place to pack keywords or create a new business identity for every city. Review the relationships behind the references so templates agree about which organization is publishing the content.

Trace fields back to visible evidence

We build a review table with the field, its current value, the visible section that supports it and the person who approves it. This makes the audit understandable to a business owner who does not write code. A field without a clear source should become a question, not a guess.

Google's structured data policies require representative, visible, accurate content and explain that valid markup does not guarantee a rich result. Automated tools do not detect every quality problem. These are important limits of validation, documented in Google's general structured data guidelines.

Distinguish supporting content from technical references

The visitor should be able to find the business facts and claims represented by the markup. That does not mean printing every technical key or identifier into the page. A machine reference can connect the article to its publisher while the visible page explains who publishes it. The review should establish agreement in meaning, not force code notation into ordinary prose.

For time sensitive facts, include the conditions that make a value meaningful. A starting price without its scope can be misleading even when the number is correct. An opening time without an applicable day or exception can describe the wrong availability. Confirm how these values are maintained before allowing a reusable template to distribute them.

We keep unknowns as unknowns. If a business can't confirm a founding date, a credential or a rating count, we leave the claim out or send it back to the owner. A validation warning about a recommended field does not override the need for a truthful value.

Look for inflated or inherited claims

Templates can quietly repeat a mistake across a site. A theme may ship with example organization information. A plugin may reuse the same review block on unrelated pages. A copied service template may retain an old address or an offer belonging to a different package. We inspect sample pages from every template as well as the homepage.

In a hypothetical national consulting business, a page explaining service availability in a city should not automatically create a physical office in that city. In another hypothetical example, a company that supports nonprofit clients should not describe itself as a nonprofit organization unless that is actually true. Audience, geography, and organizational identity need separate treatment.

Review claims that could influence trust with particular care. Ratings, credentials, awards, affiliations, and ownership descriptions need appropriate support. If a claim is absent from the approved business facts, ask its owner to confirm it before allowing the template to distribute it.

Handle addresses and ratings with the correct feature rules

Google's LocalBusiness feature documentation lists a physical address among its required properties. A service territory is not a substitute street address. If a business has no appropriate public address for that representation, do not manufacture one to make a feature test pass. Choose an accurate representation and accept any resulting feature limitation.

A private operating address also needs a deliberate publishing decision. Website structured data is publicly retrievable information even if it is not visibly printed in the page layout. Confirm that the team intends the information to be public and that the chosen representation follows applicable content guidance. A hidden field is not a privacy control.

Google's review snippet guidance excludes self serving reviews of a LocalBusiness or Organization from the relevant star review feature, including reviews displayed through an embedded third party widget. Genuine testimonials may still help readers evaluate a business, but displaying them does not establish eligibility for search stars.

Keep testimonial editing and rating calculations separate. An approved short testimonial excerpt is not a new review with its own invented numeric score. If a page presents an aggregate, its count and calculation need support from the actual applicable reviews. Do not reuse a company wide rating on unrelated subjects to imply feedback those subjects never received.

Test both representation and rendering

After the business review, use the relevant validation tools to inspect syntax and supported feature requirements. Check the live page as well as the intended code. Multiple plugins can produce overlapping blocks, and a template may insert values differently from what the editor preview shows.

Then read the visible page again. Does it contain the same offer, scope, and conditions? Can a visitor find the facts without relying on hidden machine readable content? The review is incomplete if the structured information looks polished while the human facing page is confusing or contradictory.

Technical implementation belongs within a website maintenance process that also checks rendering, links, and template behavior. The content owner and developer should agree on the approved facts so neither has to infer the other's intent from code.

Inspect template interactions before adding another plugin

Inventory the sources of structured output: the theme, an SEO plugin, a commerce system, custom template code, and any manually entered block. More than one block can be legitimate when they describe related subjects coherently. The problem is conflicting or unsupported output, not merely the presence of several blocks.

  1. Select representative pages for each important template and any known exception.
  2. Record the structured subjects and significant values currently emitted.
  3. Map each value to its source in the content system or template.
  4. Compare overlapping descriptions of the same entity for conflicting names, URLs, addresses, or relationships.
  5. Correct the responsible source, then inspect the live output again.
  6. Check the same change on another affected page to confirm that the correction did not introduce a new mismatch.

For example, a site's theme might output the former logo while its SEO plugin outputs the replacement. Updating the visible header alone would not resolve that disagreement. Find which configuration supplies each value and establish one maintained source for the shared fact, or a clearly documented relationship between the sources.

Use the relevant rich result test for supported feature checks and inspect the actual page after release. A test of a pasted draft can help identify syntax issues, but it cannot establish what the deployed template emits. If the live output differs, investigate rendering, configuration, or caching before assuming the saved content was applied correctly.

Connect updates to the source of truth

When a package changes, the update task should include visible copy, structured data, related documents, and any repeated information elsewhere on the site. If different people maintain these surfaces, assign the handoff explicitly. Otherwise, an apparently complete content update can leave stale values behind.

Use the record described in AI readable business facts to track ownership and review triggers. Facts with a short lifespan need a dependable update path. A holiday schedule or temporary offer should not depend on someone remembering that a plugin contains a second copy.

Keep a lightweight change log. Record which templates were affected, what values changed, who approved them, and how the live output was checked. This helps the next maintainer distinguish an intentional relationship from an accidental duplicate.

Worked example: fix a city template that invents a branch

Consider a hypothetical consulting company that serves clients in several cities remotely and occasionally travels for agreed project work. Its website has a regional availability page. A copied template inserts a LocalBusiness description using a downtown address taken from a demonstration design, along with a five star rating and a founding date nobody has approved. The markup parses successfully. These invented facts make it unacceptable despite the technical pass.

The business owner confirms that no branch exists at that address and that the rating does not come from a maintained review record. The content owner confirms that the visible page should explain service availability. The correction begins with removing the invented location and trust claims from the generating template, then representing the actual company and the page's purpose using verified information.

The team checks all pages sharing the template, because fixing one page manually would leave the same error elsewhere. It verifies the visible geography, any map, the contact route, and repeated structured information. The website maintainer also ensures that the example address is not still being supplied by a second plugin or an inherited footer setting.

Acceptance is specific: the page no longer implies a nonexistent office, the correct business identity is used consistently, public claims agree with approved content, and the relevant live output has been checked. A search feature may change or disappear after removing inaccurate information. That is not a reason to preserve the false representation.

Keep current search expectations separate from useful content

Google's Search documentation updates state that FAQ rich results are no longer shown. A useful FAQ section can still answer customer questions, but adding FAQ markup should not be sold as a way to obtain that retired display. Review older plugin recommendations and audit templates that still promise it.

Google's generative AI optimization guide also does not require special AI schema, llms.txt files, or forced content chunking for Google Search. Keep structured data accurate where it serves a real purpose. A more elaborate block does not guarantee an AI citation, recommendation, or better ranking.

Build maintenance around the same approved facts used by the website team. When an offer changes, update both the explanation and its structured representation. When a search feature changes, review whether the implementation still serves its intended purpose. These are different triggers and should produce different tasks.

Define a useful completion standard

A completed review should establish that the selected types fit the page, important values are accurate, claims are supported, visible content agrees, and the implementation has been checked. It should also identify anything that remains unknown. Do not turn the absence of a particular field into an automatic failure when the business has no truthful value to provide.

Connect structured data work to the wider search and AI visibility strategy, while measuring it as a quality task with clear acceptance criteria. The defensible result is a more accurate representation of the business. Search appearance remains a platform decision, so a passing test should never become a promise of a specific display or recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Does valid structured data guarantee a rich result?

No. Validation can identify supported technical conditions, while accuracy, feature rules, page access, and Google’s display decisions also matter. A passing test should not become a promise of a particular appearance.

Should every location page use LocalBusiness markup?

Choose the representation from the real subject of the page. A service area is not an invented branch, and Google’s LocalBusiness feature requirements should not be satisfied with a false or inappropriate address.

Should I remove a useful FAQ because Google retired FAQ rich results?

No. Keep questions and answers that help readers. Review the markup and any outdated feature promises separately, and do not measure the FAQ’s value by eligibility for a retired display.
