A local ranking report can look impressive while leaving an owner with unanswered questions. Does the business appear where its best customers actually search? Are the visible services ones the team wants to sell? Did the increase in activity produce suitable inquiries, or more calls the office had to decline?
Our Maps work answers those questions in a set order. First we pick the searches that matter and check them from fixed points around your area. Then we compare your profile with each business above you and fix the gaps you can actually change, starting with categories and services. Every month we recheck the same searches the same way, alongside the calls and direction requests the profile logged.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Maps and local pack SEO cost?
Ongoing work is priced after the free strategy call, based on the profile and website work you need. The $99 Jev audit scores your site's content and up to three competitors you name. That comparison can identify page questions to address. It doesn't measure Maps positions or prove why a competitor ranks above you; location-specific search checks serve that purpose.
Can you guarantee a top three local pack position?
No. Anyone selling a guaranteed top-three spot is promising something only Google controls. We agree the work, the searches we'll check and when we'll review them, and we say plainly when a search isn't moving.
Why do rankings differ across nearby neighborhoods?
The customer’s search context matters. A result observed from one area should not be treated as the result for the entire territory. Our service area rank tracking guide explains how to choose and compare representative observations.
Does selecting more service areas expand our ranking radius?
We do not treat the service area field as a ranking radius control. Its purpose in the project is to communicate real coverage accurately. Visibility across that territory still needs to be observed, and requests from each area need to make operational sense.
Should we create a page for every nearby city?
Only when each page serves a meaningful customer need and has enough distinct, accurate information. A coverage hub may answer the question better. We choose the structure after reviewing services, routes, customer questions, and the evidence available for each proposed page.
What will we receive from the work?
The fixes themselves, made in your profile and on your site, plus a monthly look at the same searches. Before work starts we agree which searches we track and what counts as a call or a direction request. After that, the work follows what the comparison shows and how much your team can take on.
What decides who shows up in the Google local pack?
Google says local results come mainly from relevance, distance and prominence. You can't move your building, so the work goes into the other two: categories and site pages that match the search, plus reviews and mentions that make the business better known. Google also says nobody can pay it for a better local ranking, which rules out the shortcuts some sellers pitch.
Why does a competitor farther away rank above us?
Because distance is only one factor, and a business with a closer match on categories and services or a longer review history can outrank a nearer one. We compare your profile and site with the businesses in the pack, one field at a time, and start with the cheapest gaps. Our own profile shows a service area and no street address, so for our listing, too, categories and reviews are the fields worth working on.
Can you get us into the top three for every search?
No one can promise that, because results can change with the searcher's location. Someone near the North Split may see different businesses than someone several blocks away. Compare a fixed set of searches and locations over time, alongside actual inquiries, before deciding which changes to make.
What do you track to show it's working?
The profile's own monthly numbers: searches that showed it, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks, each compared with the same month a year earlier. Our August 2026 log for a local Indianapolis-area business we work with counts 334 clicks through to its website from the profile, 45.9% above August 2025. Direction requests count intent to visit, so reports label them that way.
Can a road closure near us hurt how customers find us on Maps?
It can make the door harder to reach even when the ranking holds. In Fountain Square, a storm drain repair that started March 9, 2026 closed the Virginia Avenue and Prospect Street intersection, expected to stay shut through October 2026. A nearby business should check how Google routes drivers and post a profile update pointing to open parking and entrances.
Where does Trojan Digital Marketing do Maps work?
Maps work reaches Avon, Plainfield, Greenwood, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, Carmel and Zionsville from our Indianapolis base, and we take on businesses in other states as well. Pack work happens in the profile and on your site, so a shop elsewhere gets the same field-by-field comparison. We set the searches we check from fixed points around your own area, wherever that is.

What about Indianapolis changes the Google Maps local pack?
Google Maps and local pack SEO in Indianapolis, Indiana deals with dense competition downtown and shifting routes, and both affect who appears and whether customers reach the door.
Indianapolis, Indiana
Downtown Indianapolis's six square miles produce 22% of the annual tax revenue generated in Marion County. The 2025 State of Downtown report counted more than 400 restaurants, coffee shops and bars downtown and 23 new businesses opened in the previous 12 months.
When many similar businesses sit within walking distance, distance barely separates them, which leaves categories and reviews to do more of the work.

Which of Google's local ranking factors can you change?
Google Maps and local pack SEO for an Indianapolis, Indiana business sorts Google's three local factors by how much of each an owner can actually change.
| Google's local factor | What it measures | Where the work goes |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well the profile and site match the words in a search | Categories, services and a site page for each main service |
| Distance | How far the business is from the searcher or the place named | An accurate pin and clearly listed service areas, since the address stays put |
| Prominence | How well known the business is, online and off | Reviews with replies and consistent directory listings |
In what order does local pack work happen?
Google Maps and local pack SEO for an Indianapolis, Indiana business follows a set order, so cheap fixes land before anything that costs real time or money.
- Choose the searchesAgree on the handful of searches that bring paying work, in the words customers actually use.
- Record the starting pointCheck those searches from fixed points around your area and save the results with dates.
- Compare the packLine up your profile against the businesses above you on categories, services, photos and review replies.
- Fix relevanceAdjust categories and services, and tighten the site page each main service links to.
- Build prominenceAsk recent customers for reviews, answer every one, and correct your listing on major directories.
- Report each monthCompare profile searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks with the same month last year.
Define the local opportunity before choosing a ranking target
- Business
- Start from the real business.
- Coverage
- Identify the places it actually serves.
- Office
- Do not turn a service area into an invented office.
The local pack is the group of local business results that can appear within a Google search. Google Maps is a related discovery surface, but a business should not assume that every search, location, or device shows an identical result. We record which surface was observed whenever visibility is measured.

We begin by discussing three things: the work you want, the areas you can serve well, and the next step a suitable prospect should take. A company seeking recurring commercial contracts needs a different search plan from a company booking urgent household appointments. A broad keyword list can hide that difference.
The output is a local opportunity map in plain language. It identifies priority service families, relevant customer areas, common decision questions, and operational boundaries. Areas that are technically reachable but expensive to serve should not automatically receive the same priority as the company’s established routes.
Work with the factors Google actually describes
Google’s local ranking guidance describes relevance, distance, and prominence. It also states that businesses cannot request or pay Google for better local ranking. Those principles set realistic expectations: profile clarity can be improved, but a marketing plan cannot remove geography or purchase an organic position.

We translate the framework into questions the business can answer. Does its information explain the services a prospect is seeking? Does the website support those services with credible detail? Is the observed search location sensible for the operating territory? What genuine evidence helps a customer recognize and evaluate the company?
A competitor’s visibility is a research clue, not an instruction to copy every field. Competitors may serve different customers, have different locations, or offer work your team does not perform. We examine the underlying difference before recommending changes to your profile or website.
Confirm the business foundation
Local pack work starts with a legitimate profile when the business is eligible. A proposed city target does not justify a fabricated location. Google’s business representation guidelines reject mailing only virtual offices and set conditions for customer facing coworking locations. We use the real operation as the basis for the plan.

Businesses without a public storefront can review our service area business SEO service. The important question is how customers are actually served. A national online business should not be placed on a map using an unrelated address simply because a location term has search demand.
For an existing eligible profile, our Google Business Profile optimization service handles the accuracy, categories, service descriptions, media, and ongoing responsibilities that support the broader local search program.
Build a baseline that another person can understand
A useful baseline records the query, observation date, search surface, approximate search location, and business result being evaluated. It also identifies whether the query contains the company’s name. Branded discovery and nonbranded discovery answer different business questions and should not be blended into a single success claim.
Geographic sampling needs a reason. For a mobile service team, we might select several representative customer areas and a smaller number of boundary areas. For a storefront, the sample may focus on the neighborhoods from which customers realistically travel. Sampling points are research locations; they do not represent new branches or map listings.
We use permitted research methods and tools, with their limitations documented. Google’s spam policies prohibit automated rank checking access without express permission. When a provider supplies location based observations, its method, coverage, and available depth should be understood before the numbers are used to make budget decisions.
| Observation | What it can help explain | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance for a priority service near a core customer area | Visibility in that sampled context | A fixed ranking for every resident |
| Profile interaction trend | Changes in customer interest and actions | The number of completed jobs |
| Website inquiry from a relevant service page | Progress into a business conversation | That a single profile edit caused the inquiry |
| Qualified appointment recorded by staff | Commercial relevance of the request | Profit without reviewing job economics |
Use the website to explain scope and reduce uncertainty
A searcher who reaches the website should be able to confirm that the business handles the intended work. We review the main service pages for the questions people ask before contacting a provider: who the service is for, what information helps assess the request, what is excluded, and how the next step works.

For example, a commercial cleaning page can explain walkthrough preparation, building types accepted, and the difference between recurring service and a one time project. A garage door page can distinguish a replacement consultation from a repair appointment without providing hazardous repair instructions. These details help the office receive inquiries it can evaluate.
Location pages earn their place by answering a separate customer need. A useful page might explain genuine scheduling coverage, a local service constraint, or an owner approved example of work in that area. Swapping city names into identical text does not create a compelling reason for a customer to read another page.
Develop evidence that customers can evaluate
Evidence may include permissioned work examples, clear business information, authentic photographs, and customer feedback. The appropriate form depends on the service. An equipment specialist may need to explain supported systems and assessment steps, while a retailer may need recognizable product and store information.

We help identify what is missing and how it can be obtained from the operating team. An interview with a scheduler may reveal the exact information that prevents wasted appointments. A project manager may have a useful example that needs customer permission and a plain language explanation. That work produces material customers can use.
Review collection should invite genuine experiences without incentives or selective positive solicitation, consistent with Google’s content policy. We do not turn review requests into keyword scripts, staff quotas, or pressure to revise criticism. The service experience remains the source of the feedback.
Keep AI search work connected to the same customer questions
- Fit
- Explain the service scope.
- Trust
- Show supporting evidence.
- Next step
- Give a clear contact route.
Businesses increasingly ask whether local SEO also supports AI search discovery. Google’s generative AI search guidance says foundational SEO remains relevant. Our approach is to make service information clear, credible, accessible, and useful, then observe results without promising that an AI system will cite or recommend the business.

A practical content review asks whether someone could understand an answer without guessing. If a company offers a site visit before an estimate, the page should say what that visit establishes. If service availability varies by job type, the page should explain how to confirm coverage. Those answers help people regardless of the search interface they used.
For broader content and technical work, our SEO, AEO, and GEO service connects local pages with the rest of the site. We retain a clear distinction between observed mentions, website visits, and qualified business opportunities.
Measure the path from visibility to work the team wants
Google’s performance guide explains that profile data can include organic results and Google Ads, and that available metrics vary. Website clicks are not website inquiries; call button clicks are not answered calls. Reports should preserve those definitions instead of labeling every interaction a lead.

We recommend a simple inquiry disposition process. Staff can mark a request as suitable, outside the service area, outside scope, duplicate, unreachable, or already a customer. The list should stay short enough to use consistently. Over time, it shows where a visibility gain is helping the business and where the message needs correction.
A hypothetical month illustrates the distinction: 40 recorded inquiries could include 10 outside scope and 6 duplicates, leaving 24 suitable requests. If 12 of those become appointments, the appointment rate among suitable requests is 50 percent. Those example numbers are arithmetic for planning, not a Trojan Digital Marketing client result or an expected conversion rate.
A focused 90 day investigation and improvement cycle
In a hypothetical first month, a service business could define its priority services, confirm the real operating territory, inspect profile accuracy, and establish comparable observations. The team would also test phone and form routes and agree on what counts as a suitable inquiry.
In the second month, it could improve the highest priority service explanations, address missing profile information, gather useful evidence, and repair obvious customer journey problems. Changes would be recorded with their intended purpose. The team would avoid changing several unrelated variables merely to create an activity report.
In the third month, it could compare like for like observations and inquiry dispositions. A visibility change might justify more investigation; an increase in qualified appointments might justify extending a content approach. If the data is thin, the conclusion should remain limited. A review period is a decision point, not a deadline for guaranteed rankings.
