Compare project readiness before comparing channel labels
- Search → guide
- First discovery and useful reading.
- Return → inquiry
- A later visit can lead to contact.
We start with the work you want to discuss. Does the business welcome early planning, require a developed design or offer a discovery process that helps establish scope? A lead supplier’s categories may not answer that question. We ask what the prospect selected and what details come with the contact. An owned resource allows the business to explain its preferred starting point, but the explanation still has to be useful and accurate. The comparison should assess whether each route introduces suitable conversations, rather than assume every remodeling contact is ready for a quotation.
Put the actual agreement beside the proposed asset schedule
A purchased lead arrangement should state how inquiries are qualified, delivered and handled when they do not meet the agreed definition. We read exclusivity and credit terms in the contract itself, since no universal rule says every supplier sends a contact to a fixed number of contractors. An owned project needs an equally concrete asset schedule. Record domain registration, platform administration, commissioned content rights, analytics access and inquiry data arrangements. The word owned is insufficient if the remodeler cannot identify what it can operate or transfer when a provider relationship changes.
| Decision | Practical test |
|---|---|
| Project definition | Determine whether the prospect wants inspiration, design help, discovery or a construction proposal. |
| Customer expectation | Inspect which company and service the prospect saw before submitting the inquiry. |
| Rights and access | Identify controlled accounts, commissioned work, licensed portfolio material and available inquiry records. |
| Exit and continuity | Document what transfers, what requires another agreement and how the inquiry route continues. |
Treat a portfolio as evidence with defined rights
A remodeling business may have permission to show a project without owning every photograph or drawing associated with it. That distinction matters when the resource is moved, edited or repurposed for advertising. We’d list those asset questions in the project scope and ask you to confirm who gave permission for each photo and drawing. The South End district guide provides design related commercial context, but a nearby showroom’s content is not automatically available to a contractor. Ownership review should cover the actual creative material, not just the finished website files.
A proposed Charlotte channel comparison
Consider a remodeler choosing between an external inquiry programme and a proposed resource that helps homeowners organize selection decisions. In the external route, the owner would examine how the supplier classifies the project and what the prospect expects next. In the owned route, the website would identify the remodeler and ask which project choices remain unresolved. We’d run sample inquiries through both routes and compare the handoffs, the asset terms and the staff time each reply takes. The evaluation would not assign a fictional contract value to every contact or assume that a more detailed form always produces a more suitable client.
Follow one inquiry from introduction to acknowledgement
We inspect the ad or page that introduces the offer, the form fields, the business name the visitor sees and the confirmation message. Then inspect what the remodeler receives. A branded journey should preserve the selected project type and the person’s stage of decision. If the supplier operates the introduction, review its actual wording rather than infer it from the delivered record. The acknowledgement should not turn a request for discovery into an implied appointment or project acceptance. This walkthrough reveals mismatches that a channel cost comparison can easily miss.
Distinguish advertising from buying a supplied inquiry
Advertising can send visitors to a resource controlled by the remodeling business. Purchasing a lead can involve another company generating the contact through its own customer journey. Those are different arrangements even though both may involve ongoing spending. The owner should identify who controls the advertising account, the destination, the form and the records in each proposal. An owned site can receive organic traffic and paid visitors without changing who the customer is contacting. A job-site sign can send neighbors there too. Under Charlotte’s UDO Article 22, a temporary job-site sign on a single-family lot under construction can be 6 square feet plus a 2-square-foot rider. It has to be gone within a week after the building permit expires. In our proposal, who runs the ads and who owns the site would sit as two separate decisions.
Use staff review to make measurement meaningful
- Observe → review
- Check the page and its evidence.
- Update → recheck
- Publish the change and check the result.
A useful reporting definition might separate an initial idea, an appropriate discovery inquiry and a project accepted for further scoping. The remodeler should choose the categories it can maintain consistently. Source data can show how an inquiry entered the system, while staff records explain whether the business could act on it. A submitted form is not evidence of an agreed project. The Google Ads conversion measurement guidance explains measurement for advertising activity; the contractor still needs its own commercial definitions to interpret what those actions mean for the business.
Allow for the work that continues after ownership is settled
The resource needs current project examples, accurate service descriptions and a reliable intake route. Account ownership does not perform those tasks. A proposal should identify the maintenance supplied by the agency and the factual input required from the remodeler. Review permissions when portfolio material changes and revisit the form when staff repeatedly ask for missing context. The business can evaluate an owned resource while retaining another useful source of inquiries. The decision should follow concrete terms and observed customer fit, without a promise that organic activity immediately replaces every purchased channel.

Questions, answered.
Is an exclusive lead automatically a qualified remodeling project?
No. Exclusivity describes a delivery arrangement; qualification concerns whether the request fits the business’s actual service and starting point. Review both. A contact can be exclusive and still concern a project stage, location or service the remodeler does not accept.
Does an owned resource mean all marketing costs stop?
No. The business may continue to pay for hosting, maintenance, content work and advertising. It also needs staff to respond to inquiries and approve project information. Ownership provides control of agreed assets, while ongoing operations determine whether those assets remain useful to prospective clients.
What should we ask about transferring a microsite?
Ask which accounts and files are included, how the domain is held, which content rights transfer and how inquiry records can be retained. Telephone routing and licensed photographs may need separate treatment. The proposed handoff should explain the actual steps and responsibilities rather than rely on a general promise of ownership.
How can Trojan help without choosing a channel for us in advance?
Trojan can map the customer journey, review the proposed asset scope and identify the information needed to compare a supplier arrangement fairly. The remodeler can then judge control, qualification and maintenance against its own operating needs. No channel has to be declared universally better before those facts are understood.
