How to Write Product and Service Comparisons for AI Search

Your buyers are probably weighing you against other options before they call. A fair comparison page uses the same criteria for every option and says plainly where each one fits. AI search tools can quote that kind of page, and visitors from ads or referrals get a straight answer.

Comparison pages belong in a wider AI Mode SEO plan. We'd aim for an explanation you can defend line by line, and we'd never call our own offer the winner in every case. Jeff Clerisier, who founded Trojan Digital Marketing, works out each scope with the client directly. Start with the decisionOne service can lead to different questions about fit, evidence and the next step.

Start with a recurring decision from sales or customer service. Buyers may compare approaches, scope levels, ownership arrangements, or whether to outsource a task. A brand versus brand page is only one possibility, and it requires reliable information about each named offer.

A hypothetical maintenance buyer may need to compare a recurring service agreement with an individual assessment. A hypothetical retailer may need to compare a catalog refresh with a full ecommerce rebuild. Those decisions can be explained using the business's own scope knowledge without making unsupported statements about competitors.

The buyer question mapping article helps identify where the comparison belongs. If customers have not yet understood the problem, a brief educational explanation may need to come first.

Use the same criteria for every option

Pick criteria that change the decision: fit, scope, responsibilities, implementation effort, maintenance, access, evidence requirements, and how price is determined. Write the criteria before filling in the options. This reduces the temptation to choose a different test whenever one option looks less favorable.

CriterionUseful question
Suitability
What situation makes this approach appropriate?
Scope
What is included and what requires separate work?
Customer role
What information, approvals, or access must the buyer provide?
Ongoing obligations
What must be maintained after the initial work?
Uncertainty
What needs assessment before a commitment can be made?

Short is fine as long as the conditions stay visible. Use short cells for the parallel facts and nearby prose for material qualifications. Do not hide the most important condition in a footnote that reverses the main message.

Separate facts, estimates, and recommendations

A fact has a source or an accountable business owner. An estimate depends on stated assumptions. A recommendation explains why an option may fit the described situation. Mixing these categories makes promotional opinion look like objective evidence.

For a hypothetical website scope comparison, the need for customer content approval may be a defined responsibility. The delivery schedule may depend on that approval and integration complexity. The recommendation to start with a smaller scope may be professional judgment. Label each appropriately rather than presenting all three as fixed product specifications.

Google's helpful content guidance supports an emphasis on useful, original information. In practice, write the explanation your buyer needs. Copying a competitor's comparison and swapping in your brand adds nothing.

Be precise about ownership and lead sharing

Make account access explicitDomain, website, analytics and customer records need clear ownership and a workable handover.

Ownership comparisons often become misleading because they combine several different rights. Domain registration, website content rights, hosting access, analytics access, and inquiry routing should be described separately. A customer can own assets and still pay for hosting, renewals, maintenance, or marketing services.

When naming a lead platform, verify its current product specific terms. For example, Bark's US terms distinguish General Barks, which can go to up to five professionals, from direct Enquiries. That does not establish a universal rule for all marketplaces or all lead types. The number refers to total potential recipients, not five additional competitors.

For an owned website, describe direct inquiry routing only if the actual practice supports it. Do not imply that customers cannot contact other businesses independently. Judge our microsite network service the same way, by its written scope, asset rights and real use to each market. When we report network numbers from Garrison, the microsite software from Trojan Digital Marketing, we keep the trade, count, site total and dates together. For example, 17 calls and form inquiries came from 204 Indiana water restoration sites during July and August 2026, with missed calls excluded.

Give the reader a fair reason to choose another option

A credible comparison can explain when the larger service is unnecessary. If the buyer already has a working structure and needs a contained repair, a comprehensive rebuild may not be the first step. If the buyer lacks internal capacity to maintain an asset, ownership alone does not resolve the operating problem.

We'd argue it makes the offer stronger. Buyers who fit can see why, fewer people call about work that was never right for them, and scope talks start from a clearer place.

Keep the comparison current

Assign a review owner and record the source date for external claims. A provider's price, product, or contract terms can change. Update material claims when the underlying facts change, and preserve the reason for the revision. Do not change the visible review date merely to make an unchanged page appear fresh.

The content freshness playbook helps turn this into a maintained process. Check related pages too: a current comparison can still conflict with an old FAQ or sales handout. Business fact consistency matters throughout the journey.

Offer a next step that resolves the remaining uncertainty

Review the comparison with someone outside the sales process

Ask a colleague to choose an option for a clearly hypothetical situation and explain the tradeoff. If they cannot identify when the alternatives make sense, the page may be persuasive copy disguised as a comparison. Revise the criteria or add the missing limitation. If they choose a different option for a reasonable reason, that can indicate the page is doing its job.

Check mobile presentation as part of this review. A wide table that hides the condition column can change the practical meaning of the content. Keep row labels understandable, allow the table to be read without visual guesswork, and provide nearby explanation for complex conditions. The comparison should remain intelligible when a reader arrives directly at the section rather than starting at the top of the page.

End with the information needed to choose well. Invite the buyer to bring their current setup, constraints, and priorities. A project specific discussion should resolve what the public comparison cannot know, rather than repeat a sales pitch.

Ask Trojan Digital Marketing to compare the scopes that fit your situation. A useful conversation can clarify responsibilities, ownership, ongoing costs, and the evidence needed for a decision without pretending that one approach is always right.
