Search Console shows how often your pages appeared in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and you’re not sure what those numbers mean for your business. Start with what the report covers, then tie each finding to one page decision. Trojan Digital Marketing won’t turn those impressions into guessed leads or a ranking across every AI assistant. Bring your latest export: the first strategy call is free, and during business hours we aim to reply within five minutes.
Use this workflow alongside the AI visibility measurement baseline. The goal is a repeatable review that another person can understand from the saved report configuration and a concise decision log.
Confirm what the report contains
- Event → record
- Define the event and check the record.
- Meaning → decision
- Review the business meaning before acting.
Google’s Generative AI performance report documentation identifies impressions for supported Search features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. It provides page, country, date, and device views. Keep the report labeled as Google Search data rather than presenting it as a measurement of ChatGPT or every generative service.
Read the current documentation and the available interface before building a recurring report. Product coverage can change. Record what the report exposes at the time of the review, and avoid creating columns for clicks, positions, or other values that the selected report does not supply.
An unavailable report is a measurement limitation to investigate. We won’t pass off a third party readiness score as Google’s observed impressions.
Choose the business question
Start with a page or a group of related pages. A business might ask whether its service explanation and preparation guide receive reported exposure, or whether a recent factual correction is now reflected in the page visitors reach. The impression report can inform the first question; checking the live content addresses the second.
Keep those checks connected but distinct. A useful page update may be worthwhile even when impressions are too limited for a meaningful comparison. Conversely, a page with reported exposure still needs accurate information and a functioning next step.
Write the question in the report header. This prevents the review from becoming a general tour of interesting numbers with no decision at the end.
Preserve the configuration with the export
Record the property, selected dates, page filters, dimensions, and export date. Keep the original file unchanged and perform calculations in a separate working copy. Use a filename that identifies the source and period so an older export is not mistaken for the current baseline.
Note whether the newest dates are preliminary. A comparison based on an incomplete period can change as the report updates. For a recurring review, choose a consistent approach to completed dates and document any exception.
Do not mix time zones casually when comparing the source with an inquiry system. Keep each report’s date convention visible and decide which convention the combined business review will use.
Understand totals before reconciling them
The source documentation distinguishes property aggregation from page aggregation. Multiple pages from a site can therefore produce a page table total that differs from a property level chart. Explain that distinction before treating a difference as missing or duplicated business activity.
Keep the AI report alongside the broader Search performance view. It includes activity from the Web search type, so adding the two totals as independent audiences would double count overlapping activity. Use each report to answer its own question.
The broader Search performance documentation is useful for understanding report definitions and limitations. Our small dataset guide explains how overlapping windows and changing denominators can create misleading comparisons.
Review pages by customer purpose
Group the exported pages according to what they help a customer do: understand a service, compare options, prepare for an appointment, or contact the business. Keep the grouping rule stable. A broad article and a specific service page may both receive exposure while playing different roles in the journey.
For a hypothetical landscape architecture firm, a planning guide might answer early questions while a consultation page supports an inquiry. It would be unhelpful to judge the guide solely by whether it behaves like the consultation page. Review the intended next step and the quality of the explanation.
Open the important pages during the review. Check that the service remains current, examples are accurate, and contextual links lead to useful destinations. An impression report identifies exposure; the page review determines whether the destination serves the reader well.
Turn observations into proportionate actions
If an important exposed page has an outdated offer, assign a factual correction. If its next step is unclear, improve the relevant link or contact explanation. On our own microsite network we watch each town’s search data, and we rebuild or replace the towns that stay quiet. On a single website, we’d check what a quiet page is for before cutting or expanding it.
Record the observation and the action separately. A decline in impressions does not by itself identify the cause. Keep a list of material website changes and investigate plausible explanations with suitable evidence rather than attributing every movement to a recent edit.
Use the AI Overview evidence audit playbook when the question concerns source quality and the content freshness playbook when the main issue is maintaining accurate information.
Connect exposure with the rest of the review
- Observe → review
- Check the page and its evidence.
- Update → recheck
- Publish the change and check the result.
Keep saved assistant observations, attributed website visits, and qualified inquiries in separate sections. They can help explain the broader customer journey, but an impression count should not be converted into a forecast of any of those measures.
Use the referral to inquiry workflow to define the operational handoff. When the available records cannot connect exposure to an outcome, say so directly and retain the evidence that is available.
Questions to answer in the report notes
Why do page totals differ from the chart?
Check aggregation and filters first. Different report levels can count appearances differently, so a mismatch is not automatically an error.
Can this report tell us why a page appeared?
It reports the available exposure data. A complete explanation of selection requires more than the impression count, and the report should not be presented as revealing a guaranteed optimization formula.
What should the team do after exporting?
Choose a small number of page decisions, assign owners, and define completion checks. Save the source configuration so the next review can compare like with like.
