An SEO score of 82 looks more precise than a note saying “the page needs work.” That precision can be useful when the score summarizes known checks, but it can also invite the wrong conclusion. The number does not tell you where Google ranks the page, how many customers it produces, or whether an AI assistant cites the business.

When you use the free website audit, begin with what each result actually measures. This guide separates checklist scores, technical observations, performance measurements, and business outcomes so you can interpret a report without treating every number as a prediction.

About the current Trojan auditor: it reports individual observations with methods, evidence and limits. It does not calculate an overall SEO score, AEO score or AI visibility percentage. This article explains scores you may encounter in other reports and how to compare them with observable findings.

A diagnostic score belongs to the tool that created it

An automated checker can inspect elements such as a page title, heading structure, image alternatives, or business information. It can then combine those observations into a score. The result depends on the checks included, the information available, and the weight assigned to each finding.

For example, two hypothetical tools might disagree because one gives substantial weight to image alternatives while another emphasizes metadata. Neither score can be compared meaningfully until you understand the underlying rules. Review the individual observations and the page itself before deciding which change matters.

Our guide to running a useful audit explains how to record the URL, date, and customer task alongside the report. Those details make a future comparison more useful than an isolated screenshot of the overall number.

Search performance comes from a different source

Search Console reports observed Google Search activity such as impressions, clicks, and average position. Those are different from a checklist assessment of page elements. A site can satisfy many basic checks and still need stronger relevance, a clearer offer, or more useful content to earn attention for a competitive query.

Google explains the metrics in its Search Console performance documentation. When comparing periods, keep the date ranges and filters consistent. Do not assume that a higher audit score caused a change in clicks simply because the two happened around the same time.

Performance measurements need a label and a context

Loading and interaction measurements should identify their source and testing context. A controlled test is different from data collected from real visits. Devices, network conditions, page versions, and available field data can affect what a report shows. A number without that context is difficult to use responsibly.

Google’s Core Web Vitals guidance describes loading, responsiveness, and visual stability as aspects of user experience. An audit category carrying a performance label is not automatically a complete measurement of those experiences. If a measurement is missing, use the appropriate performance tool or developer review rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

AEO readiness is not an AI citation report

An AEO or AI readiness checklist may consider whether content answers recognizable questions and identifies the business clearly. Those observations can guide editorial work. They do not establish that a particular assistant has retrieved, quoted, or recommended the page.

Google states that its AI search features use the same foundational SEO practices, without an additional special markup requirement. Treat clear answers and accurate information as useful publishing practices. Do not translate a readiness score into a guaranteed recommendation or a percentage chance of being cited.

For a broader explanation of the terms, see our Indiana search, answer, and AI optimization guide. Use actual reporting from the relevant platform when the question is whether visibility occurred.

Missing data is a third state

A report should help you distinguish a passed check, a failed check, and a check that could not be completed. If the service cannot retrieve a URL or obtain a particular measurement, the correct conclusion is that the information is unavailable. That is different from finding an actual defect.

Imagine an audit cannot retrieve a service page during one attempt. Open the URL yourself, verify that it is the intended public address, and try the relevant check again if appropriate. If access questions remain, ask the website operator to investigate. Do not describe the page as deindexed or inaccessible to customers solely because that one retrieval failed.

Use a comparison only when the inputs match

For a before and after review, compare the same URL and scope. Record what changed and use the same definitions. A homepage only review and a multi page review are not interchangeable. A new version of a scoring method can also change the result without the underlying website changing.

  • Keep the original report date and exact URL.
  • Identify the checks that are available in both versions.
  • Separate confirmed fixes from newly discovered issues.
  • Keep traffic estimates distinct from observed traffic.
  • Assess customer actions separately from diagnostic scores.

Suppose a hypothetical page score rises after its title and image alternatives are improved, but inquiries remain unchanged during the next review period. The edits may still be correct. The customer decision could depend on pricing clarity, service fit, follow up, or demand. Investigate the relevant evidence instead of declaring either success or failure from one metric.

The most valuable output is a clear statement: what was observed, why it may matter, what action is proposed, and how the result will be checked. Our audit fix prioritization guide helps translate that statement into a workable queue.

If a report raises questions across content, technical settings, and local visibility, our SEO, AEO, and GEO services can help define the work and its measurement. Use the score as a prompt to investigate, and use evidence to decide what to do.
