SEO, AEO and GEO should help an Indiana business become easier to discover, understand and contact. The useful starting point is a customer decision: choosing a store, comparing a service or preparing to request a quote. An optimization plan should improve that journey and produce evidence you can review.
This guide connects search and AI terminology with a practical sequence for local businesses. It also explains what the available measurements can establish. A website audit score, a search impression and a qualified inquiry describe different things. Keeping those distinctions clear makes it easier to decide what deserves the next investment.
Know which problem each label is describing
SEO covers search discovery and the website experience around it. AEO commonly describes work that makes questions easier to answer. GEO usually refers to visibility in generative search and assistant responses. Providers use these labels differently, so ask for the actual deliverable behind each one.
Google's generative AI optimization guide treats its AI search experiences as part of SEO and emphasizes distinctive, useful material. That is a reason to build a coherent plan rather than three copies of the same service content. Our AEO definition guide explores the terminology; use this article to choose the work.
| Question | Useful deliverable | Completion check |
|---|---|---|
| Can people find the service? | A review of indexing, search intent and important internal links. | The actual page and account observations are documented. |
| Can they understand it? | An approved explanation of fit, process, scope and evidence. | A reader can identify the offer and its next step. |
| Can they contact the right team? | A tested form, call route or booking handoff. | A labeled test reaches the intended recipient. |
| Is the work helping? | A consistent review of visibility, inquiry quality and outcomes. | The definitions and missing information are explicit. |
Begin with one offer and the questions behind it
Choose an important service or product category. Record the people it suits, the places you actually serve and the person who handles inquiries. A Fishers practice planning consultations, an Avon retailer explaining departments and an Indianapolis contractor qualifying project requests need different customer paths.
Use questions from real conversations. What does the customer need before an estimate? What does the offer exclude? Is an appointment requested or immediately confirmed? Keep identifying customer details out of the working notes unless they are needed and appropriately handled. The purpose is to improve the answer, not publish private correspondence.
For each question, assign one main page. A supporting article earns its place when it explains a distinct decision in more depth. Repeating a service description for every wording variation creates maintenance without necessarily making the answer more useful. The page overlap guide helps sort those roles.
Check access, speed and the complete contact journey
Open the important page on a phone. Can you read the offer while images load? Are controls usable without precision tapping? Does a form retain useful input when it shows an error? Test both the successful path and an incomplete submission. Check that the customer sees an accurate confirmation and that the intended person receives the request.
A successful browser visit does not establish Google indexing. Use Search Console URL Inspection for Google's indexed information and available live checks. Have the website operator investigate confirmed access issues, accidental exclusions or conflicting URL versions. Preserve existing useful URLs when improving content.
The website audit can organize initial findings. Record unavailable checks as unavailable. A tool cannot verify a CRM handoff without the relevant access, and an automated content score cannot prove that a customer understood the offer.
Use evidence that answers a practical question
- Fit
- Explain the service scope.
- Trust
- Show supporting evidence.
- Next step
- Give a clear contact route.
Original evidence can be a process explanation, an approved project photograph, a useful comparison or a working tool. Explain what the visitor is looking at and how it relates to their decision. A large gallery without context may leave the important questions unanswered.
Our Georgetown Market signage case study shows bilingual category signs in the store. The observed design keeps the category prominent and the translation adjacent. That is a concrete information design example; it is not evidence of a measured sales or ranking increase.
The Moto Supreme design showcase illustrates another decision: helping a group understand accommodation and continue to the booking provider. Its grouped photography and planning information are visible design evidence. When evaluating any case study, distinguish the documented interface from business results that require separate data.
Write clear answers without chasing a formula
Answer the customer's question first, then add the detail needed to understand its limits. A consultation question may need a short explanation. A comparison of service scopes may need a table. A technical concern may require an assessment before the business can answer responsibly.
Google does not specify a fixed answer length for featured snippets; its systems select them. See the featured snippet guidance. A concise paragraph is useful when it serves the reader, not because a certain word count guarantees selection.
Visible FAQs remain useful for unresolved buyer questions. Google's documentation changelog says FAQ rich results stopped appearing on May 7, 2026. Do not buy a promise of expanded FAQ results. Any structured data should describe supported, visible facts rather than invented reviews, qualifications or locations.
Keep local identity and AI eligibility accurate
Confirm the business name, services, hours, contact route and actual operating area. A business visiting customers should explain coverage without presenting every city as an office. A useful area map should orient the visitor and avoid directions to an unrelated address.
Google's current AI guide also identifies Search Console inclusion in generative AI features as an eligibility consideration alongside indexing and snippet eligibility. Check the site's actual settings before diagnosing missing visibility. Meeting requirements still does not ensure selection.
Maintain an approved business fact record and name the reviewer. Update public answers when services, products or intake arrangements change. For an implementation scope, see Indianapolis AI marketing services and the guide to buying AI SEO work.
Measure visibility and customer outcomes separately
Search Console's Search performance report supports page and query investigation. Keep dates, country and device filters consistent. Separate page and query exports cannot establish which page appeared for each query. Averages also do not describe one fixed position seen by every searcher.
The Generative AI performance report provides impressions for supported Google AI features, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its data overlaps the Web search performance data; do not add the totals as independent audiences. Check report availability and data limitations in the property.
Assistant response samples answer a narrower question: what appeared for a documented prompt, context and time? Save unfavorable observations as well as favorable ones. A citation is not a customer inquiry. Use the AI visibility baseline guide for a consistent review.
Then connect the inquiry to the business process where evidence exists. Record the requested service, whether it fits, the source when known and the eventual outcome. Leave unknown sources unknown. Review why requests were declined before deciding that more traffic is the right next action.
Assign the next useful change
- Fix a confirmed access or contact failure.
- Improve one service explanation using approved facts.
- Add an original example that answers a buyer question.
- Connect the page to the relevant service, guide and inquiry path.
- Document the release and review comparable reporting periods.
Use the free marketing course to fill a knowledge gap or the marketing action plan to assign responsibilities. If implementation needs a coordinated team, bring the page, the customer question and your available evidence to an Indianapolis SEO and AEO scope discussion.

Questions, answered.
Do I need separate SEO, AEO and GEO pages for the same service?
A single strong service page can address related questions. Create a supporting page when it answers a distinct buyer need with useful evidence. The terminology alone does not justify another URL.
Can AI visibility be measured as leads?
Visibility and leads are different measurements. Record the search or assistant evidence separately, then use validated inquiry and business records to understand customer outcomes.
Where should a small Indiana business begin?
Choose one important offer, test the contact journey and identify the question customers repeatedly ask. Improve that page with approved facts and evidence before expanding the content plan.
