Wikipedia's Avon page lists places called Avon from Maine to Utah. It adds Avon Lake, Ohio, Avon Park, Florida and a few spots in England. Indiana's Avon borrowed the name too. Wikipedia's article on the town says the name comes from the River Avon in England, the same river Stratford-upon-Avon sits on.

The town has had other names as well. The Town's community profile lists Hampton, White Lick, Smootsdell and New Philadelphia as earlier names. So when a tool meets the word Avon on its own, it has a long list of places to pick from. Without a state, a county, a ZIP code or a road nearby, it has to guess.

Inside Indiana the name is easier. The Census Bureau's 2024 estimates for Indiana list just one Avon, a town of an estimated 24,735 people in Hendricks County. That's why “Avon, Indiana” or “Avon, IN 46123” points to one place when it's written out in full.

This worry isn't hypothetical. Google has shown this site to people searching “stratford-upon-avon seo company” and “local seo company in avon co,” our Search Console data shows. Those searchers almost certainly wanted someone in England and someone in Colorado. If a search engine can mix the Avons up, an AI tool can too.

The namesakes worth knowing, and the details that give each one away, look like this.

Avon, Ohio looks a lot like Avon, Indiana on paper. Wikipedia counts 24,847 people there at the 2020 census and puts it in the Cleveland metro area. The Indiana town had an estimated 24,735 in 2024 and sits in the Indianapolis metro. Size and a big city next door won't tell a tool which Avon is yours.

Even the interstate overlaps. Wikipedia places Avon, Colorado along Interstate 70, as the gateway to the Beaver Creek Resort. An INDOT corridor report describes the Ronald Reagan Parkway linking I-70 with I-74 through eastern Avon, Indiana. So a line like “just off I-70” fits both towns.

Some collisions start inside town. The Town's neighborhoods page lists Stratford of Avon next to The Groves of Beechwood Farms, The Settlement and Timber Bend. Stratford of Avon reads a lot like Stratford-upon-Avon, the market town in Warwickshire, England. A page that only says “serving Stratford of Avon” gives a tool two very different places to match. Write “Stratford of Avon in Avon, Indiana” the first time the name appears on a page, and mention Hendricks County nearby.

Washington Township is the other trap. The Census Bureau's Indiana estimates list 45 separate Washington townships, one in each of 45 counties. Avon sits entirely inside the one in Hendricks County, so pair the township with the county every time.

Avon Avenue has a history of its own. Wikipedia notes that US 36 and SR 267 used to cross in the center of Avon. That stretch was decommissioned in 2013, and the section through town is now officially called Avon Avenue. The Town's own pages still use both names, so a page can mention SR 267 once to help a reader place the road.

Start with your Business Profile. Google's guidelines ask for a precise, accurate address or service area. They also warn that unnecessary information in a business name isn't permitted and could get the profile suspended. So keep the name just as your sign shows it, and let the address carry Avon, IN 46123.

Your description is where the extra clues go. Say Avon, Indiana and Hendricks County once, in a normal sentence, and name a landmark you're actually near. Keep landmarks out of the address field, though. Google says cross-streets and nearby landmarks belong in the address only where the official street address doesn't pinpoint the business.

Some local details belong to one Avon only. ZIP-Codes.com lists 46123 as the only ZIP code for Avon, IN, while Avon, Colorado uses 81620 and Avon, Ohio uses 44011. The Town's website puts Town Hall at 6570 East US Highway 36. And the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis places Avon in Washington Township in eastern Hendricks County, about 14 miles from Monument Circle.

The roads help too. Wikipedia calls US 36 the main east-west road through town. The Town's community profile treats US 36 and Avon Avenue as the center of town, and that's the old crossing of US 36 and SR 267. The Town also places Washington Township Community Park on US 36, just west of SR 267 and Town Hall. Its profile even lists the Haunted Bridge over White Lick Creek in the town's history.

Use these anchors in your copy wherever they're true for you. A line that names Town Hall, US 36 or Avon Avenue tells people and tools exactly which Avon you mean. Pick one way to describe your location, such as “west of Indianapolis in Hendricks County,” and use it everywhere.

Test the tools your customers use. Ask each one the same questions, in a private window if you can.

• Who does [your service] in Avon?
• What are the hours for [your business name] in Avon?
• Find a [your trade] near Avon Town Hall.
• Is [your business name] in Avon, Indiana or Avon, Ohio?
• What's the address and phone number for [your business name]?

A wrong answer usually gives itself away in the details, such as Eagle County, Beaver Creek, Lorain County, Cleveland, the Farmington Valley or Warwickshire.
